Default Removing brown hinge marks

Gday

I've got a number of stamps from the 1930s & 40s with nasty brown marks from various evil hinges of the period, many of
them showing through to the front. Does anyone know a successful method for cleaning them off, preferably while keeping
the gum on the mint stamps. I have seen a product in the Lindner range that claims to remove marks from "Schon hinges"
but I haven't got a clue what Schon hinges are so that's less than helpful. Naturally, the only stamps with these marks
are the decent ones with a cat value of $20 - $50 so I am not all that willing to experiment with mineral turpentine,
boiling water, vodka and all the other miracle cleaners out there. Maybe the vodka....

Good idea - might pay a visit to the big library downtown and see if they can help. As for the brown hinge stains,
these are from sort of hinge that was like Scotch tape, popular in the 1950s, I think. It leaves a nasty stain that
goes right through the paper as well as making the paper semi-transparent, much like a grease spot. I've only ever seen
it on mint stamps which makes me think that it could be washed out of stamps if you don't mind losing the gum.

Cheers - John

Hi!
The two "Erni"- liquids from Lindner do work very well.
What in german is called "Schonfalz", are those lausy brownish hinges
from the 30s.

I deal very much in this genre,
they are an inherent part of my purchase value.

I am here to tell you, the mark is irredeemable.

It is a tattoo, a blight, a mark, a stain that shall remain forever.

For more rare examples, you can hide somewhat
when placed in hagners.

I have used "Big Kev's goo remover" petrol, paraffin
lighter fluid, boiled, ironed with blotter, pressed,
and prayed.

IMHO Sir Rodney is 100% on target.."irredeemable" which also
translates to irreversable.

Thanks, All

And, at risk of being accused of posting in the wrong group, I have listed a mint Canada 1951 fisherman, warts and all
on ebay for 99 cents. US national parks mini sheet to follow. Just to keep kosher, I won't tell you my ebay id or the URL!
