1996 silver eagle..not in unc...worth?
I have a 1996 silver eagle, not in unc condition or near it. Is all
its value in the intrinsic silver content? Or essentially all of its value? TY |

TY It may be a key date, but I can't even sell rolls of them for spot value. I have 3 from 2002, and unless I can come up with an alternative use for them, it appears I'm stuck with 60 bullion novelties that make the dealers rich and do nothing for me except take up space. |

Most of the completed sales on eBay are in the $30 to $40 range. -- Jim Seymour Not uncirculated? *Isn't that a bit odd? *Is it a proof? *I cannot imagine a 1996 SAE circulating. *As what? Aram. It came out of a Reno slot machine years ago...so its condition is well under unc. |

He probably wouldn't be interested in waiting 6 months for you to come up with $15. for each coin, which is about how long it would take your scrawny ass to earn that much by dancin' for quarters on street corners. Sorry to disappoint you but No. However the mental image of your 'world hunger poster boy-like' physique dancin' on a street corner for quarters does bring a few chuckles!! Thanks for the laff and do keep dancin' for us. You're quite entertaining! Carl |

It came out of a Reno slot machine years ago...so its condition is well under unc. ============== Very interesting. Hadn't occurred to me. Of course! Makes sense. Thx. Aram. I am not a gambler and don't often play the slots (or any other game of chance), however, from a logical standpoint, it doesn't make sense to me. In the first place, spot silver was about $5.00 per ounce in 1996 (and I don't believe it has been less than that since). What idiot would put a $5 coin in a dollar slot machine? Secondly, since the SAE is pure silver, wouldn't it have a different signature than the 90% silver dollars? The machine would have to be designed to accept only SAEs wouldn't it? Would that be profitable for the Casino to have machines that accepted only SAEs? How much use you reckon they would get? And thirdly, I thought slot machines switched to Ikes only after the price of silver exceeded the face value of the dollar. Nope, doesn't make since to me. -- ©¿©¬ ~ Ed Hendricks |

[...] In the olden days (when slots actually used coins and tokens), some of them would spit out "special" coins or tokens for the higher payouts. I once got a lovely bimetallic (silver/bronze) $10 casino token when some special combination came up on a 25 cent machine. I'm guessing that the eagle was such a "special" payout. The machine probably didn't *accept* them, but gave them out occasionally. -- Jim Seymour |
