Default Signatures in Franklin library books

I have a few Franklin library books that are signed by the author.
Does anyone know if the author signed sheets of paper that were then
bound while the books were made or did they in fact "sign the book"?

Like most signed limiteds, the Franklin Library binds in sheets from a stack
signed by the author. This is almost always the practice with any signed
edition -- the author signing sheets prior to binding -- with the exception
being some small chapbooks (although I just bought a limited chapbook by Amiri
Baraka where the publisher had sent him just the wraparound title/colophon leaf
to sign the last page, and Baraka got festive and scrawled a drawing that
extended around to the title page!). This is understandable -- it's more
efficient, and there's less wear and tear on the finished product. It does seem
to make actual signed/inscribed trade editions seem "warmer" though, and for
many, more desirable.
