Did anyone take the poll ? I found the results surprising - unless

people
from this group are the only ones voting !

On what currency should Ronald Reagan's image be placed:

Dime - 7%
$10 Bill - 24%
$20 Bill - 10%
Other - 5%
None - 54%

Well the numbers have been getting higher since this morning. I
still do not believe that there are 54% that does not want to see
his face on the money though, unless it is people that is going by
what Nancy had to say about it. Not even on this newsgroup! But I
guess that they (the 54%) have been listening to JAM & a few others
from this newsgroup... As in "No more dead presidents on any of our
money would be refreshing.".

I still contend that most US citizens couldn't care less and would not go
out of their way to voice an opinion about who is on our coins or currency.
The survey's 54% probably reflects this somewhat, and the other respondents
likely selected something only when the question was posed to them and
otherwise would not have cared one way or another.

The only ones who seem to get emotional about changing images on our money
are collectors like us, politicians (when they think their constituents are
watching), and the media (whne they think they can stir some controversy).
If change is inevitable, I would have to side with the "no more dead
presidents" crowd on this issue. I still salivate over the beauty of some
of our early bank notes that I will never be able to afford.

Neat idea, however I'm about to make a post that would make better (at
least to me) use of Regan's image.

My fear about putting Regan's image on the dollar would be like what
happened to the half dollar when a certain president's image who was shot
to death was put on that coin. Death to the half dollar as no one wanted
to spend it as the image was too valuable to depart or acually use.

Many things are different today, still it makes me think what could happen,

Barney

I still believe that what really did in the Half Dollar as a 'workhorse'
coin was not making them out of 75% Cu/25% Ni/clad like the Quarter and
Dime were in 1965.

Most US citizens haven't a clue who is on our coins. Try it sometime --
ask a non-numismatist who is on the nickel or the dime. Most will just
'fess up and say they don't know, a few will guess wrong, and very few
will guess correctly.

I can understand why the Democrats would prefer Alexander Hamilton to
Ronald Reagan: strong government, government favors to selected
businesses, public debt to finance a central bank, armed troops
arresting tax protesters, a "Coast Guard" (so-called) to interfer with
free trade, yes, I can understand what Democrats see in Alexander
Hamilton that they cannot find in Reagan.

Some people seem not to like Andrew Jackson. I think that Jackson
embodied the same kinds of ideals in teh America of his time as Ronald
Reagan did for ours.

I voted on the CNN site for putting Reagan on the $10.

I've done that, Bob, and posted the results several times here. Sad,
but you're right about the answers. Most often, people could not describe
what was on the reverse of our individual coins. If I wasn't a collector, I
probably would fare about the same. (I'd be embarassed to take a civics
test.) Different things register with different people. As long as our
coins and bills remain vaguely familiar and of the same size and general
appearance, the average Joe or Jane will be happy. Who is featured on them
(and who isn't) simply doesn't rank among the issues that folks are
emotional about.
I'm a Virginia resident and have *never* heard an opinion or discussion
from a non-collecting state resident about the notion that Jefferson or
Monticello might be removed from the nickel. Most don't have a clue that a
change has been proposed, and those few who are aware of it see no big deal
one way or another. Jefferson was a Virginian. Fine. It's an honor he was
chosen as a subject on our coins and currency. If it is decided that
someone else deserves a shot at coin-dom, 99.9% of Virginians would not
care, whether they noticed or not.

At most, a commemorative dollar should be issued. How about putting him on the
deuce?

Reagan on the $2? Might be a good idea because maybe they would redesign both
sides on the $2.
