Default Seeburg PFEA1U Just stopped playing...

Hi all,

I bought a Seeburg PFEA1U a few months ago and after replacing a fried transformer on the amp finally got it to the point where it would play.

I was listening to it yesterday for about an hour when I noticed that it loaded a 45, and there was a loud metal/mechanical clunking noise. The record loaded, it played for about a 30 or 45 seconds and then it just stopped.

I hit the trip lever and it will move up but nothing happens. Using the scan lever won't do anything either. The mechanism won't move, the turntable doesn't turn, it won't reject records.

I checked all the fuses I know of but nothing obvious.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Thanks
-Tim

This got weird.

I had the box plugged in and turned on, just setting there and about an hour later, it, without me even being anywhere near the jukebox, it rejected the record, scanned and picked up where it had left off yesterday. Now it is playing things without any problems.

Any ideas?

First guess would be a bad motor run cap in the speed control unit....
if that box has one. I think it's a 4mfd 250vac oil filled cap
available where ever electric motors are sold. Sometimes the bad ones
bulge and look like they are about to explode. It's the big shiny thing
held to the chassis with a metal bracket.

In addition to what Tony Miklos pointed out, also check the relay in
that autospeed unit for pitted or malformed contacts.. Often when
things just start up again the cause is bad contacts that sit there
and arc at low levels until they burn away some carbon and resume
contact...for a while. you might also check the speed adjust pot on
the front of the unit, they often develop dead spots.

My 2 cents is the motor control relay - the two coil relay located
inside the control center. Check the contacts.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I ordered new caps for the auto-speed and I'll update once I get them in place!

Good call Rob and Jeremy, I often forget some things when they aren't in
front of me.

Ok guys,

I got the new caps and installed all of them. While it was out, I cleaned up the contacts on the relay. Popped it back in and nothing. So, I started shaking the actual mechanism with my hand, not violently, but not gently and it rejected the record, scanned to where it had left off and took started playing them. No problems.

Did I fix it or no...

Time will tell. Thanks for your help!
