Default Gold Penny

Hello,
We found a gold penny amongst our change the other day, and were curious
what the commonness of that is? Perhaps this penny is just electroplated?
How does one tell? Just curious about this interesting little coin. It is
dated the year 2000, and appears quite new.

Thanks.

Granne,
It does sound like you have a gold-plated cent. Back in 1999/2000 a lot
of companies were gold-plating 1999 and 2000 dated coins and selling
them as special "Millennium Collectibles". From a numismatic
standpoint, these coins are worth only 1¢ as they were altered outside
of the mint. I would hang on to it just because of the novelty factor,
but it won't gain any premium over face value.

Hope this helps.

In my community, I have a reputation as a coin collector, so I often have
items brought to me for answers. A few weeks ago, a lady and her children
brought in a gold colored cent. I mentioned plating and I also mentioned
high school lab experiments. Another customer, a high school aged boy, was
standing close by and contributed that the high school class had just had a
lot of experiments that changed cents to various colors and the cent the
lady had looked like possibly one of them. Bill
