Default TPG vs Raw currency

My apologies for creating such a controversy in this ng over Currency
grading... The paper-money ng is sorta dead + filled with spam..

Being new to paper money collecting I want to _protect my investment
_But still be able to 'show them off' w/o fear of damage.. thus my
desire for certified Bison, Chief, Educational notes..

Fortunately the "Memphis International Paper Money Show" is in my city
(I've attended past shows). Years ago I was a member of the local coin
club that set-up / dismantled the boruse sp but lost interest...

Now I find myself gravitating to paper money (specifically type notes)
in XF+ condition.. CU to Gem's are out of my range (unless I win the
lottery

To keep this OT I agree with note.boy & prefer 'raw' coins... for my
type sets...
High dollar paper money is a horse of a different color though

Thank you all for the advice...

You might want to try this suggestion if you want to protect your
notes but not have them slabbed. Capital Plastics used to (don't know
if they still do, but it's a good place to start) sell paper money
holders that are very much like their coin holders, but in this case,
two clear pieces of plastic with 6 or 8 screw holes. You put your
note on one, settle the top piece on and screw the two pieces together
with the plastic screws. I've seen notes that have been in the
holders for years with no ill effects (no PVC contamination and no
handling damage). It's the best of both worlds. You can display your
note without someone folding it in half and you can also protect it.
It's better than the slabbing companies use and you can probably get
them quite a bit cheaper if you shop around.

Slabbed paper money has hit that
market big time along with a lot of
controversy. The paper money newsgroup has next to nothing on the
subject but check out Collectors Universe message boards in the paper
money section for many threads on the
subject of TPG of currency.

XF+ and AU notes of the popular series
of currency are getting harder to find
as many are being bought up at auction
and on brouse floors and then showing
up in TPG slabs as MS65 Gem etc.

The processing of notes to a higher grade is only getting worse as
there
is big money to be made by those
engaged in the practice.

I find this an interesting thread. While I don't collect notes, I have been
considering
collecting a few uncirculated World note of the current existing countries.
Not very interested in the US stuff
at this time which is usually the area that commands high value and the
grade can make a big difference.

Anyone have some cheap NEW world notes for sale or trade?

Dale

Cliff; I've used Capital holders for years & really like 'em. BTW,
You can find their currency holders on eBay all the time for next to
nothing

My other reason for wanting TPG notes are when it comes to time to sell
(by my family.....after I take that long dirt nap)..

Dale; I started out collecting World notes a year ago & the bug's bit !

I've actually been accumulating world notes for the last 30 years. I
lucked up on a few really nice lots on Heritage plus there was a
dealer that dropped by RCC one time with a big box of notes for sale
for $100 and I jumped on that. During my time in the military (1970 -
1992) I did a lot of world traveling and I picked up notes from the
various places and added them to the hoard. Plus during that time I
worked part time in a coin shop in Laurel, Maryland and there were
always world notes coming with collections and the agreement with the
boss was that I could have them all at a nickel each as long as they
weren't US notes. I got a ton of notgeld that way too. My long term
plan was to accumulate as many as I could and then some day sit down
and sort them out and enjoy them (kind of like what I was going to do
with my stamp collection). But, the eyes go and the details don't
show up well for me so I look at the stacks, think about what to do
with them and then put them back in the boxes.

My daughter has the collecting bug but she is very particular about
what she will let me buy for her. She likes her coins slabbed and her
paper money in a combination of 20s, 50s and 100s. It's amazing what
a senior in college can go through in just a week or two.

So, the question remains, what do I have, where is it all (stashed in
the office in a lot of places) and how to eventually get rid of it
all.

Long time ago I did have one serious piece of luck when the Franklin
Mint was printing paper money for a lot of other countries and they
started a subscription service where you could get "specimen" notes.
I got a lot of those at a nickel per and got $15 to $50 each a year of
so later. I've seen very few since (this was around 79 or 80.

Anyway, keep enjoying what you are doing. If it stops being fun,
don't do it anymore.

Buy raw and then slab them--that way you'll have some professional help on
your side when you try to sell. Of course a seasoned buyer will want to feel
the paper since it is impossible to grade paper money without feeling it.
Catch-22 strikes again ;-)
