Encyclopedia Britanica 11th edition
I have a copy teh Encyclopedia Britanica 11 edition in good condition
that is complete except for the index. I know this edition is valuable but don't know if the missing index completely destroys it value. I'm not a book collector so i could use a little help. |

I live in San Diego and was also offered a copy of this edition. I
spoke to the premier antiquarian bookdealer in town, Wahrenbrock's Books, and he had five copies -- all different. So although this is a very desirable printing, it may not be as rare or as valuable as you might think. They're not worth a lot in the UK, they follow a kind of bathtub curve;
in my experience the oldest and newest are most valuable; the oldest for rarity and the newest for content. I have a complete set from 1955 which cost me =A310, it's still useful if a little out of date...! I'm not sure what year the 11th edition is... |

I had two sets of the 11th over the years. It's considered a classic
because of the great writers/thinkers who contributed (Bertram Russell, Kropotkin...) The "Handy" edition is compact with thin paper but not very user-friendly. However, some sets were bound in soft leather which, if in good shape, can command hundreds for decorative use. I eventually deaccessioned my last set because of space needs. I highly recommend a book of readings from 11th, "All There is to Know". Came out several years ago. |

The leather has almost completely perished, unfortunately, but I've got the three volume supplement of 1926 (13th edition), so at least I'm up to date. :-) |
