Can one open almost anonymous safe deposit box?

Under the Patriot Act, if you open a box at a bank where you are not an
"existing customer" you will have to provide some form of government
issued ID and it will be copied and records maintained.

But, there is no central governmental registry for safe deposit boxes.

Anonymous banking services in the USA? Dream on! You're living in a fantasy
world. If the feds want to find out if there's a box in your name anywhere
they would find out so fast your head would spin. Now if your friend was to
rent a box for you...that's a different story...

This isn't practical anymore. But until very recently you could get a
box in Austria or Hungary and some other countries with no ID, only a
password. But US pressure on the EU has ended that.

rent a box for you...that's a different story...


....Right up until they make a connection between you and your
friend, then investigate and interrogate that person, too.
