Default Vikings~ a new sighting

G'day Mette,
in the event you do not have this listing,
Vietnam 1986 Type 206 01d Viking longship.
I do not have a scan, but would be of this format
(the 3rd in a series of 7)
http://cjoint.com/data/dved1WvITQ.htm

Good morning, Rod

Thanks for the image. I do know of this stamp, but honestly do not think
that it is a viking ship. It looks to me more like a commercial ship from
the Middle Ages, that later developed into the type of ships used by eg the
Hanseatic League. I will keep this in mind and research further. There are
several websites around on shipbuilding that would be able to give a clue.

Another type of ship that is often confused with the vikings sailing
vessels, were the Roman galleys used by the Etruscans, but their
construction is not related to the much later Vikings.

Regards
Mette

Hi Mette,
perhaps you misunderstand me
I do not have the scan of the viking ship,
the image I supplied was just one in the set.
The image of the Viking longship is Vietnam SG985
perhaps some newsgroup member may have a scan. (fingers crossed

As an aside, I would also like to see Bulgaria SG2436 1975
quoted as a "Phoenician galley"
I was unaware there were such things, as I understood the only
Phoenician ships yet found were some small cargo hulls near Malaga, Spain.
I think the Phoenicians are more of an enigma than the Etruscans

Thank you for the image, Blair. I will keep it my archives for reference
purposes. At the moment I do not have much time for diving into the question
in depth, and may come back to the question at a later date.

Sorry to pour water on everyones bonfire, but I have a problem with
the Vietnam "Viking" Ship. I fear it is insufficiently detailed to be
certain - the Saxon "King Alfred" navy used a very similar ship - also
I have grave doubts about the sail. All the pics I have seen have had
a much squarer sail, and I have doubts about the stability of a sail
overlapping the girth of the ship by so much. I am not an expert
sailer but I think a sail of that width would be prone to making the
ship capsize!
