I will keep it my archives for reference purposes. At the moment I do not have much time for diving into the question in depth, and may come back to the question at a later date. Mette Sorry to pour water on everyones bonfire, but I have a problem with the Vietnam "Viking" Ship. I fear it is insufficiently detailed to be certain - the Saxon "King Alfred" navy used a very similar ship - also I have grave doubts about the sail. All the pics I have seen have had a much squarer sail, and I have doubts about the stability of a sail overlapping the girth of the ship by so much. I am not an expert sailer but I think a sail of that width would be prone to making the ship capsize! Since Blair posted the image of the full set in question I have researched a bit -- not much, mind you, there's still a lot to be done here! -- and any sources I have consulted so far "classify" only the first 1d-stamp in the set (with square sail in blue/yellow colour) as a Viking ship. The others are various sailing ships of later date. The Vikings had many styles os ships, suitable for purposes such as war, exploration and colonization, fishing, and trade. Among the best known in archeological excavations are the drakkar (warship), and the knarr (cargo ship). The knarr was widere than the longship and had higher sides. It also had fewer oar ports and depended primaly on sail power. When Ericv the Red and his son Leif Eriksson made their voyages of discovery to Greenland and Newfoundland, the knarr was the vessel used for the journies, so the main use has been for transporting colonists or cargo. Animals and trade goods were placed in the middle of the ship, so rowing had to be done at the bow or stern, or both. My time permitting, I am working on a general update of the Viking-site, and also a specific update of the checklist. The group will be notified whenever the updates are available. Mette |

I assume the work load too great. It would be nice to have seen the likes of Qatar (who rates a SG number in its Bayeux tapestry issue) and the Zeppelin triangular cachets etc &etc included. |
