Mail order list?
I'm tired of trying to find coins on Ebay. It seems many of the coins I
want have multiple bidders that push the price past its value (Peace dollars are a good example), and then add the $4.95 shipping (for a Barber dime in a padded envelope, gee whiz). Anyone care to give a mail order website for US coins that they trust? I've tried looking online but the multitude is overwhelming and I wouldn't know who I was dealing with until I receive an order. TIA, Joe |

Although it often does happen, I am curious what you are using to decide the items value. On proper auctions, at least you see the coin clearly. I won't name names, but I can tell you AS FAR AS COINS, I have never been pleased with mail order, and have ordered from many of the big name ads in Coin World, let's say. If you go mail order route, you "might prefer to" use one that uses ANA numerical grading. At least that way you and the seller will be speaking the same language. It "seems to me" that verbal ideas of what the grade is always fall way short. But of course, thats because "Grading is subjective". It "seems to me" it's always subjective in one direction. As far as supplies, Brent-Kruger and Jakes have done well by me. I've never bought coins off those two names, so DO NOT include them in the above dialog about coins, they probably are very good with coins too. TIA, Joe -- DW |

TIA, Joe I have used Jake's Marketplace with no problems in about 15 different orders for US coins and supplies over the last few years. http://www.jakesmp.com/ For ancients and a few world coin, http://www.fsrcoin.com/ Frank's mail bids auctions are very interesting when they occur and the fixed price list seems more than reasonable to me. Also for non-US coins http://www.eurocollections.com/ Euro collectors International has been of use to me time and time again. I don't collect nearly as much US stuff as I used to (previous 30 years) due mostly to high prices. In my last 60 eBay buys, none were US coins as best I remember. I still like Washington Quarters and Modern Commemoratives etc. Finished the Jefferson's in Unc last year and I very am proud of that. I like the older US commemoratives too but I can't afford to undertake that project ;-) wellllllll.......maybe mostly in EF?..... not sure ;-) maybe next year although Salzburg coins are calling mighty loud at the present time! You are correct, many coin auctions do have great pictures and may sell at or just below the graded value. But, usually these auctions are for BU or AU or the more pricey type of coins. I collect circulated coins from AG to VG. Once in a great while, I'll buy a coin in F or VF condition. I'm more of a quantity rather than quality collector. So if you look at US coins in the range of AG to VG you will notice that the final bid price plus shipping is, more often than not, above the book value. Joe |

TIA, Joe E-Bay sure can be an overwhelming adventure can't it? So can web sites. Here's the ones I think are top notch and fair with accurately priced large inventories--as usual YMMV. http://www.cheapslabs.com/index.php I've bought some from this web site and was happy with what I got--I stick with ANACS, PCGS and NGC. The prices are accurate for what you are buying. Buying with a CC was quick, secure and easy. Navigation of the site was excellent. Clean site with minimul flashing GIF's and no pop ups. Shipping charges were based on how much you bought, which is fair. (Most good online sites have their shipping based on that.) They have a 7 day "100% satisfied" return policy if you are not happy. The only beef I had was that they did not send me an e-mail when they shipped like they said they would. This might have happened because I did not create my own online account with them--worried about getting spam. The best you can expect from any site is a padded envelope inside a cardboard box. Otherwise they would have to charge a lot more for bullet-proofing their containers that they ship stuff in. I'd never buy from any web site that does not have a no questions asked return policy. The customer is always right. http://www.heritagecoins.com This site has a very large inventory of mostly PCGS coins. Some they have up for auction so you might get a good deal. They also use Flash animation so the pages are huge and take a while to load on a dial-up connection. Excellent navigation with a very professional look. They have Flash animation pictures of each coin they sell. They also show price trends for each coin and population reports. I really like that feature a lot. They have a return policy but it's only 3 days. They use Veri-sign for CC purchases--that's supposed to be the most secure way to buy online. http://coin-shop.com/ This site has a large inventory with easy navigation. I've bought a few raw coins from there and they are pretty spot-on with thier grades. They also sell slabbed coins and those are usually not too much more than the raw ones they sell so I recommend sticking with the slabbed coins. Shipping was fairly priced I thought. No pop ups or ads plastered all over. Quick and easy online ordering that was secure. Their return policy is a whopping "no hassle" 10 days. Not too many pictures of the coins they have, but they seem to be honest and they do have descriptions of what they are selling. They even have a couple of over graded slabbed coins that they are selling for the price of the lower grade--that's unusual. All of these have specials deals and bargain bin coins too. |
