Signed books/dedications
Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in worth between signed
books, and signed books with a personal dedication? For example, would a book signed by an author be worth more than a book signed by an author and dedicated to LordTBT? Does a dedication lower worth at all? Is a book signed and dedicated worth more than a book not signed at all? Thanks. |

Ok, I am talking purely in terms of common person here.
If a book is signed and dedicated to a common person, doesn't that raise the value as opposed to an unsigned book? What about a signed and dedicated book versus a signed book with no dedication? |

ps.com... Ok, I am talking purely in terms of common person here. If a book is signed and dedicated to a common person, doesn't that raise the value as opposed to an unsigned book? What about a signed and dedicated book versus a signed book with no dedication? Common sense suggests that (at least for a famous author) the more he wrote in the volume the higher the price will be: but proof requires empirical evidence (actual prices of actual books signed by the same author in different ways.) -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

The rule of thumb I've heard (believe I read it in Firsts) - inscriptions are worth less than their 'normally' signed equivalents for the first hundred years. I vaguely understand this - I suppose that's the point where the general rarity of the volume makes all inscriptions (whatever sort) worthwhile? |

Inscriptions can make it easier to detect 'anomalies' in autographs, as there is a larger sample to examine. Certain 'Signature Only' proponents will dispute the value to an inscription to a non-famous book owner, with good and valid points on both sides of the argument. Best thing, Know Your Seller and the signature. I have this Good/Fine "I,Robot" I will let go for a great price, signed on the FFEP. 'Tis unfortunate that Asimov did not do the signing.....
