Any experience with "Diversified Furniture" bookcases?
My book collection is badly in need of better shelving (and in many
cases just shelving at all). Does anyone happen to have experience with the plywood/veneer bookcases made by "Diversified Furniture"? Here is one example: http://tinyurl.com/mvdnk These are fairly inexpensive (imported from Slovenia), but are available with a reinforcing rod which appears to make them sturdy. I have emailed to ask if they are manufactured with formaldehyde adhesives, something I'd like to avoid if possible. |

These are $179 for single bays 60" high X 36" wide IKEA "Billy" double bays are 79" high X 63" wide for $99.98 http://tinyurl.com/k7bsb The only thing lacking is the decorative veneer. 75% of which is invisible in use in any case, when used side by side. The 150lbs limit and steel reinforcement on these is totally unnecessary IMO. The Billy have a more sensible 66lb. Think about it. 36" wide shelves would hold 36, 1 inch wide books. Unless you're shelving encyclopaedias and nothing else a provision of almost 5lbs per book is totally unnecessary. With removeable adjustable shelving, these can be taken out and reversed every few years in the event of bowing. Just as with turning a mattress. IKEA even do a 79" X 31" unit with glass doors for $179.99 http://tinyurl.com/nndrn IKEA US main bookshelf page - http://tinyurl.com/l69eu Up until a few years ago at least, almost all composite timber sheet and board products, plywood, chipboard, MDF, or particle board as here, probably made use of formaldehyde adhesives. The only way of avoiding it would be to use an actual timber such as pine, or an even more expensive hardwood. michael adams |

I just bought a couple of these from Target: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html...n=B00006I BB5 or http://tinyurl.com/l3om7 The are nice - robust and strong - the shelves seem strong enough to not develop the inevitable sloping or sagging that happens with so many bookcases that are less expensive. One of the main reason I got them was for their glass windows on the doors. Dust can be such a pain in the ass and this should go a long way to helping keep that out. I bought these explicitly for my collectable's - my signed books and 1st's. My other books go into usual relatively inexpensive bookcases that can be had just about anywhere for 75 dollars. The only problem with these were the shipping costs. Although the web site states they are available in stores, I couldn't find one in any store remotely close to me. I called and asked Target if they would ship a few to a local store since they *are* supposed to be available in stores, but they said no dice. So I paid close to 70 dollars a piece for shipping. That's pretty damn steep in my book, but I bit the bullet and got two. I could have gone a local hunt to various stores to find similar bookcases, but a simple mouse click got the best of me. If I could find a couple more in a local Target, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. Hope this helps. |
