Canadian quarters were sterling silver (.925 fine) from 1870-1911. Then
from 1912-1966 they were .800 fine. In 1967 they were both .800 fine
and .500 fine. In 1968 they were both .500 fine and 0 silver (nickel).
From 1968-1998 they stayed all nickel. 1999-2001 they were in both all

nickel and also in multi-ply steel. Since 2002 they have all been
mulit-ply steel.

1858 to 1919 all were 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper

1920 to 1966 all were 80% silver 20% copper. Each dollar face value weighed
23.32g total or 18.66g pure silver (0.6 oz)

1967 first half of the year was 80% silver, second half of the year 50%
silver, the $1 and 50c coins remained 80% silver as did all the proof like
sets, the circulation 25c and 10c are bought at the rate as if the coins
were 65% silver.

1968 first half of the year 25c and 10 were 50% silver or 11.66g (0.375 oz)
pure silver per dollar face value.

Hope this helps,
Kyle.

Would be interesting to know if silver is still found in Canadian
change the way it is in the US. I would think that since all newer
Canadian coins are strongly magnetic (nickel or steel), it would be
easy to sort them from the nonmagnetic silver coins as well as
nonmagnetic US coins.

Once in a while a silver coin is found in circulation, this is likely
because someone has spent it from a collection or had turned in old rolls of
coins not knowing the silver value is grater than the face value.

When I buy silver the first thing I do is pass a magnet over the coins and
get all the nickel out, then sort the pre 1966, 1967 and 1968 10c and 25c.

Right now the RCM is culling the circulation coins for all the older 100%
nickel 5c, 10c, 25c coins. The new nickel plated steel coins are lighter and
the vending industry would like to have only one specification for coins
they accept. To my amazement it appears that the sorting process can
visually sort coins by date on a conveyer type system. Any coins meeting the
right requirements are diverted into the scrap container, and all the new
coins will pass through. So, I would expect if there was much silver
floating around that this process will help to reduce the chances of finding
any in the next few years.
