Default Sheaffer Snorkel repair?

While digging through my cousin's desk, I found a very, very good
condition Sheaffer Snorkel fountain pen. My cousin said, "that old pen
isn't worth anything, but if you like it you can have it." Not being
one to turn down a free gift like this, I decided to bring it home and
check it over.

When I took the pen apart, I was able to get the snorkel part to come
down, but it will not go back up into the nib. I decided to take the
pen apart and let it soak for a while, washing the old ink out of the
pen. Moreover, I really like the feel and look of this pen and I was
wondering who would be ideal at repairing this type of pen? What type
of ink storage device does this pen have?

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Let me suggest you go to www.richardspens.com, then click the link to reference
pages, then anatomy of a snorkel. Should give you every thing you need to
know.
Good luck with the snork

this probably means the sac is in bits or is hardened. I have one I
restored. The sac was solid and had to be cracked through the holes in the
tube protector.

i have a few pics and only the minor points of my snork adventure on my
website. I had some panicky moments with trying to get it apart and as a
result got some excellent advice here on this forum so I'd recommend doing a
google search using my screen name and the term snorkel.

you can repair it yourself IMO. I'm only learning myself and I managed
albeit with fits and starts. I did have Frank Dubiel's book as a reference
and the following

http://www.enter-net.de/auktion/artikel/snorkel4_e.htm

it isn't an expensive repair even if you buy frank's book. And it isn't
difficult (though I made it look like it was!) just more involved than most
repairs. Most of the gurus are much backlogged right now so if you feel you
can take it on, i recommend doing so.

Ron,

Some advice: don't soak the parts inside the barrel in water, only the feed
and nib. The spring has a tendency to rust, which is not good. The biggest
trick to snork repairs is replacing all the rubber parts. There is the sac,
the barrel o-ring, the point holder gasket, and the gasket in the blind cap.
All these parts must be in good shape to allow the pen to work properly. As
suggested above, if you look at Richard's site, you can get the information
you need for the repair. Any additional questions can be answered here.
The most common snork size will take a size 14 sac. The more flexible the
sac, the better.

As you have questions, let us know and someone will help you out. The
repair isn't difficult, just lots of parts and it all has to be done
correctly to get a functioning pen. I've found snorks to be great pens in a
lot of ways. If you do a good job on the repair, they are very reliable
pens, not to mention you can shoot ink across the room!

Kelly G.
