How to remove self-adhesive stamps from paper ?
Hello all,
I've got some self-adhesive stamps from Tonga/Sierra Leone. They sucessfully resisted coming off their paper support even after extensive bath. Are there other, more appropriate "chemicals" than water to get these buggers off the paper and into the album ? And no, Franz, I won't throw them gimmicks into any bin whatsoever :-) TIA Klaus |

White spirit, paint thinner, or light petrol might do the trick (they did it for self-adhesive stamps from other countries, I have yet to see one from Tonga or Sierra Leone, though), but they might also dissolve the ink. Usually the glue will be softened by light petrol, and you can wipe it off with an old cloth. Jan-Martin |

Lighter fluid is purer (try Zippo or Ronson fuels) and use in a well ventilated space (and of course, unless you wish to join the Darwin Evolution Club, do not smoke!!!). I meant the lighter grade of liquid hydrocarbons which is known as "Leichtbenzin" in Germany (and sold in pharmacies), and yes, it has many other names like cleansing petrol, lighter fluid, ... and your warnings apply to it, too (and even more so). I have tried to soak them off without much success. Finally I decided that the only reliable procedure was to guillotine them neatly from the cover and mount them "on piece". Franz |

More and more collectors today are choosing to save self-adhesive stamps by
neatly clipping them from the envelope and keeping them "on paper." If you clip neatly they should look fine, and it certainly saves time and effort in trying to remove them from the backing paper. |

Finally I decided that the only reliable procedure was to guillotine them neatly from the cover and mount them "on piece". Franz Franz I would go further than you and say that in many countries most of at least the standard rate definitives are sold in self-adhesive format. Think of GB and most of the old Dominions, for example - and the number of "gummed" issues will surely diminish with the increasing use of both self-adhesive issues and labels printed at the point of application. I agree that collecting these "on piece" is the best way forward. Some self-adhesives are relatively easy to separate from their cover but others are almost impossible. Best regards, Roger |

Darwin said that species evolve when the less well-adapted produce fewer (or
no) offspring than the better adapted members of the same species. The fitter and smarter pass along their genetic material at a higher rate and thus lead to the betterment of the whole species. Those who remove themselves from the gene pool by their extremely stupid actions conform to Darwin's theory - thus the name. "Victor Manta" wrote in message ... If these are the old 1960s - 1970s stamps, just leave them on the envelope paper (cut square is neatest). Anything that's strong enough to get them off the paper also has a good chance of damaging the stamps. |
