Appraisers in North Eastern Massachusetts?
I have some coins that need to be graded. I live north of Boston.
Does anyone know of a good place to go? I know nothing about coins. These were left to me by my Dad and I need to have some graded before I sell them. Thanks |

I think Ira may be too far away from where you are, but he's top-notch. I know nothing about coins. These were left to me by my Dad and I need to have some graded before I sell them. That's a good plan. You don't want to be taken advantage of. If you wanted to give a general description of the types of coins in the collection, we might be able to tell you which ones might be worth a more detailed examination. |

Thanks. I already posted details under "Selling suggestions please".
In fact you were one of the respondants. It was the advice I got there that made me realize I needed to take them to someone who knows their stuff. Mostly I want the Kennedy Halfs and Jefferson nickels looked at. But I guess it wouldn't hurt to have all the mint and proof sets that I have eyeballed by an expert. This is what I have: - 2 '70D mint - 1 '70S proof - many '71D mint - 2 '71S proof - 2 '71S Eisenhower mint - 2 '71S Eisenhower proof - 2 '81S proof |

Sorry, I didn't recognize you We get a lot of folks asking pretty much the same thing, so I seem to have given you the standard answer twice. Ah well. Mostly I want the Kennedy Halfs and Jefferson nickels looked at. But I guess it wouldn't hurt to have all the mint and proof sets that I have eyeballed by an expert. Absolutely. Is there a coin collecting club in your area? If you can ask someone for friendly advice who isn't the person you're trying to sell it to, that always helps unless you know and trust a specific dealer. There's several folks here I trust completely but I don't know anyone in your neighborhood. If you can't find a coin club, hopefully someone here can suggest a good dealer for you to go to. If the "appraisal" consists of counting 'em and giving you a number, shake their hand and walk away. If they get out the magnifier & take a close look at the steps, (while you're there, because they sure will after you leave...), that seems to me it's a good sign. Many dealers will charge a $50.00 or so per hour fee for an appraisal if you're not selling to them, but will waive it if you do. Money well spent from what you describe you have, and what it may be worth. I wouldn't count on it - the high values are valuable because they're rare, but you don't know until you have it looked at. Best, Dave Hinz |

The closest dealer I know is:
Lexington Coin, 6 North Hancock Street, Lexington, MA 781-863-1500 (Call to verify their hours and address) I've had good exchanges with them. There are also monthly coin shows in Westford, MA http://www.westfordcoinshow.com/ (fourth Sunday in 2006) and Nashua, NH http://www.coinshows.com/nashua_jg.html (third Sunday). Several dealers buy coins at those shows (but several want you to mention a price first). B.J. Jane wrote: I have some coins that need to be graded. I live north of Boston. JJ Teaparty is definately a quality organization. I also know the guys
at Lexington and would recommend them first as they are good guys as well, and you don't have to drive in to Beantown. Jeff Kierstead in NH is also worth looking up. I have often been tempted to go to the Westford show, but that is a haul from here, about 150 miles, but have heard lots of good reports. Let us know how you made out |

FYI - I just contacted Teaparty. They told me that Boston is open and
is their only location. |
