PR: Walton 1913 nickel at Long Beach Expo
California Debut: Walton 1913 Liberty Head
Nickel Coming To September Long Beach Expo (Long Beach, CA) -- Just weeks after its dramatic "discovery" and authentication at the American Numismatic Association convention in Baltimore, the previously missing Walton specimen 1913 Liberty Head nickel will make its first-ever public appearance in California. In a joint arrangement with Walton's heirs, the ANA and Bowers and Merena Galleries, the famous coin will be displayed during the first three days of the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo, September 18 – 21, 2003. The show also will feature a special three-day display of the recently authenticated, unique specimen strike 1794 dollar, designated PCGS SP-66, that was originally in the United States Mint’s cabinet collection. It is believed to be one of the first U.S. silver dollars produced. "All of us on the Long Beach Expo staff are absolutely thrilled the descendants of George O. Walton want collectors to have the opportunity to personally see this important coin. This will be the first time the Walton specimen has ever been publicly displayed in California," said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman. "As we now know, after Mr. Walton was killed in a 1962 North Carolina car crash, family members were erroneously told his 1913 Liberty Head nickel was an alerted date. They kept it inside his custom-made plastic holder in a closet for more than 40 years. Our reward offer of a minimum $1 million earlier this year helped coax the nickel out of hiding," said Paul Montgomery, President of Bowers and Merena Galleries of Mandeville, Louisiana. The 1794 specimen dollar is the only one of that date and denomination with a silver plug inserted by the U.S. Mint to correct the planchet’s weight. The coin will be exhibited for the first time in California at the Long Beach Expo courtesy of its owner, Steve Contursi, President of Rare Coin Wholesalers, Dana Point, California. Another major attraction at the September Long Beach Expo will be the popular seminars, "Buying & Selling on eBay," Friday and Saturday, September 19 and 20, presented by eBay representative, Troy Thoreson. Plus, there again will be competitive numismatic exhibits coordinated by the Long Beach Coin Club. The Long Beach Expo features more than 2,000 dealers buying and selling rare coins, paper money, postage stamps, postcards, autographs, historical documents, antiques and jewelry. There will be more than a dozen educational sessions and club meetings open to the public during the show. Heritage Numismatic Auctions of Dallas, Texas, the official auctioneer for the Long Beach Expo, will conduct a "Bullet Sale," "Signature Sale" and "World Coin Auction." Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS); Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC); Heritage Numismatic Auctions; eBay; UBS Numismatics/Art Banking; British Royal Mint; Royal Spanish Mint; CoinFacts.com; Coin Link; and the World Money Fair of Basel, Switzerland are official corporate sponsors of the Expo. The Long Beach Stamp and Coin Clubs are co-sponsors of the event. Admission to the Long Beach Coin & Collectibles Expo is $6 (for a four-day pass); only $3 for collectors displaying a valid membership card in any numismatic or philatelic organization. Show hours are Thursday to Saturday, September 18 - 20, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, September 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Long Beach Convention Center, 100 S. Pine Ave. For additional information, contact the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo prior to September 17 at (805) 962-9939, or September 17 - 21, at the Long Beach Convention Center, (562) 436-3636.
