Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right group for my request but I'm
looking for some more information on a coin I have had in my
collection for some years now. Written on one side is IN MEMORY OF
THE GOOD OLD DAYS 1797. I've googled this up and found some
information, but what I really want to find out if this really is from
1797 or is a replica.

That auction didn't answer very many of *my* questions, so I dug this
page up: http://users.pullman.com/fjstevens/t...kens/4146.html

that I have a little while to pay the seller) the other day between
RCC posts?

Oly, if this is your first Conder token, you now face a life of addiction
unless YOU STOP NOW! There is no antidote and no known treatment for the
disease about to consume you, except to acquire more, more, MORE!

This is Warwickshire/Birmingham D&H 51. Dr. Johnson is actually on the
reverse, while the obverse is listed as "figure of a boy," and is paired
with a half dozen other distinct reverses, seven in the set, trade with your
friends, collect 'em all.

When Jim Raye was yet alive, working at 31 N. Clark St. in Chicago, I had
the happy opportunity to buy a whole boatload of Conders on the cheap, over
the course of several visits to the store.

Now, you definitely need to get one of these:

Congratulations on your new acquisition, enjoy!

I have a copy (Quarterman(?) reprint) of Dalton and Hammer, and I had
a copy of Speer (which got waterlogged in some basement flooding and
I've never been able to replace).

I have about ten or twelve very high grade Kempsons Middlesex
buildings, plus a nice large brown penny for "The Monument" and two
very nice Issac Newton half pennies (not quite in the same league as
my Kempsons). Plus I have a crappy Wilkinson or two or three, and a
crappy Lady Godiva. I might have a Prince of Wales, but I can't seem
to put my finger on it (well, at least I know where my very high grade
1826 George IV penny is). I definitely have a very high grade 1811
Birmingham Workhouse Thruppence as well, but again, I can't quite put
my finger on it.

The Kempsons were purchased over 15 years ago. My last was the second
Issac Newton maybe two or three years ago.

Actually, I want to produce an "American Tribute to the Great Cham"
art medal (something between 38MM to 50MM) for the tercentenary of
Doctor Johnson's birth in 2009, and I need this piece at home as a
"goad" and example to push the project along.

Jim Raye was a nice guy & an example of why you shouldn't put off
anything in this world if you really want to do it (I don't mean that
negatively, I mean that the length of one's life is uncertain).

My idea is to take that "putti" on the reverse, lose the minting
equipment and substitute a very large tome (symbolizing the
Dictionary) and perhaps place the date "1755" on the book.

Yes, that's it. I had a nice copy but it got mucked up badly in a
basement flooding.

I also have the little brown hardcover book on Conders that Whitman or
somebody put out about 1985-1990.

[Shamelessly name dropping now, attack me RCC denizens] Have you ever
seen Ken Bresset's Conders? I've seen some of them, and they are
great. I don't think he has one dollar apiece in them, and they are
just fantastic.

But this purchase is all about wanting to produce an art medal for Dr.
Johnson.
