I go thru my change every night and separate the copper Lincolns from
the zinc ones.
I hope to retire on my profit someday

My only use for cents are as playthings for the grandchildren. Cents must
be America's most useless coin (except to the tax person).

Value for value, it would seem to me that hording nickels would be more
prudent.

Hate to think how many pennies you would need to hoard in order to make
enough to retire on! I have around 1,000 to 1,100 cents I have found
MD'ing this year and I'm sure not going to separate the ZLincolns out.
Off to the bank for my whopping 10 or 11 bucks. All I need is the
right horse and I'll be ahead of any cent hoarders :0)

I researched the composition of the cent and discovered that besides
the steelies during '43, there was a touch of tin in the '44's, but
that the radical change came in '82 with a 97.5% zinc/2.5% (isn't that
pitiful?) copper. So I think your idea is a good one. Am I right in
assuming that you save all the coins up to and including '81?

I am saving them, but not in the vain hope of getting profit from saving
them, but keeping them as collectibles. In my searches for them, I have
found now over 100 wheat cents dating as early as 1926 from rolls. But in
change the other day I got a 1919. Curiously I have gotten quite a few from
the early 1960's and even 1959's. The S mints have been well represented
from 1968-1974 also.

I guess I stand corrected on the metal value of nickels vs. pre-1982 cents.

I don't know for sure but I think they can't melt down copper and zinc
together. A place in town here has large bins with everything sorted
out--it's all large stuff like pipes and aluminum siding. When you arrive
they just do a quick check of what you have and tell you where to dump your
load.
IOW whoever it would be that would be melting those down would not want to
spend the time and the extreme effort at sorting out all the
Zincolns--because they for sure won't just take you at your word that all of
the Zinc coins are removed.
Plus a copper Lincon is not totally copper so I don't know how that would
affect the melting procedure--this is all the kinds of things you better
check out first.
