I'm not sure if there's any error to be found. The coin looks like it has
been through it. It reminds me of some of the vinegar-baking soda, then
wiped coins I've seen.

I agree. This is not an error, but post-strike damage--perhaps a
blowtorch, perhaps high speed wire brushing.

Coin is correct for weight and ring and is fully geniune. It is not likely to be post strike
damage. Note the weakness on reverse opposite the blank area on obverse.

There's considerable abrading in directions inconsistent with worn dies,
which would be radial, your specimen looks like someone abraded after
striking by some process. The question is, by what process.

It may have been gold plated at some time and it was damaged by the removal
of the plating? Billy

Cleaned, struck thru grease with die abrasion. 1921D's are notoriously bad.
