Elia Kazan
Elia Kazan passed away today, in NY, at 94 - actor/director.
Most memorable - A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront, East of Eden (James Dean's 1st movie w/credit), Baby Doll, Viva Zapata. I guess he was one that made Brando = Brando. I respect his talents in the entertainment industy. It's too bad he'll be remembered for these great films AND for his politics by turning in some of his fellow thespians during the McCarthy years. Not totally attributed to him, but the resulting Hollywood Blacklist ruined many careers. A dark period for the entertainment industry. One would be suprised at the names that where affected; Zero Mostel, Sam Jaffe (taught HS math for 12 years), Marsha Hunt, Betty Garrett (Edna Babish from Lavene and Shirley - I loved her in "On The Town"), Charlie Chaplin(a British citizen, he wasn't allowed back into the US until 1976 when he got a Lifetime Achievement Award also), Will Geer (Grampa Walton), Lee Grant, Burgess Meredith(The Penguin) - http://classicfilm.about.com/library...y/aa032899.htm Brought back to light during the 1999 Academy Awards for his Honorary Oscar. When about half the audience refused to stand or applaud. Probably one of the fastest acceptance speech in Oscar history. -- Tommy "2Lipz" See my website http://lipprint.tripod.com |
