Yes, that. And also the image of a person with martini in one hand and a half dozen books in the other trying to reach for the next book. Even if the drink holds steady, the half dozen books will go flying in all directions. Meanwhile, another book buyer, seeing the same book, quickly darts out a hand and grabs it while our imbiber is still picking his books up off the floor. Our imbiber finally rises again above table level and wonders what it was that caught his attention. Finding nothing to remind him, he stumbles along to the next table. -- Francis A. Salisbury's Library Book Sale
Like the time I found that someone had used a piece of bacon
as a bookmark in a library book??? Working in a second hand bookshop I enjoy looking at the things people use as bookmarks. It's a bit like the Amazon "if you liked this you might also like..." system: if you use the information leaflet from a packet of blood pressure medication as a bookmark, it's likely to be a James Patterson, and if you put a leaflet in a Wilbur Smith it's likely to be for diabetes pills... (In fact we don't get a big enough sample to do that, but the idea is nice). Air tickets are among the commonest bookmarks. Completely unsurprising conclusion: all airport bookstalls sell the same sort of stuff. But kudos to the Bangkok airport bookstall for seeing the sales potential of "Forget You Had a Daughter". Erotic letters are routine. Once got an empty blister pack of Viagra but in a book that didn't fit at all, like a gardening manual. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- e m a i l : j a c k @ c a m p i n . m e . u k Jack Campin, 11 Third Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian EH22 4PU, Scotland mobile 07800 739 557 http://www.campin.me.uk Twitter: JackCampin |
