People lament, and with some good reason, the loss of fun you receive
from hunting through stacks in a used bookstore to find a gem, vs.
searching for bargains on the internet. But little 'extras' like that
from buying sight unseen can be rewarding in their own way. I recently
picked up a signed copy of Phoenix and the Mirror by Avram DAvidson for
$10. Not bad in itself. But the inscription (not mentioned) was to:
Lord Troll and Lady-wife (G.C. & C. Edmonson)
From Sir Ifric (Avram Davidson)

Edmonson was himself a Nebula-nominated author. And the in-joke makes
it one of my favorite inscriptions. Not bad when all I thought I was
getting was a good deal on a signed book!

About three years ago, I bought a copy of Vincent O'Sullivan's THE
GREEN WINDOW on the net which was described as 'signed'. When it
arrived, I discovered that it actually had a beautiful handwritten
letter enclosed from O'Sullivan to Leonard Smithers. The book had been
Smithers' very own copy......

On another occasion I purchased a first edition of Charlotte Perkins
Stetson's THE YELLOW WALLPAPER. The seller apologised for the fact that
'someone' had scribbled their name in it. When the book arrived, I
learned that that 'someone' had in fact been the author herself...!

Here's a picture of it (scroll down the page a little):
