John Pelan once denied having made a racist comment ("..enough of your
black mischief" he once said) by arguing that not only was he
extremley well read on Evelyn Waugh, but that he possessed a great
many signed Waugh first editions (though he balked at the idea of
validating this with an uploaded photograph).
Yet now he alludes to a previous Ebay bidding ID of mine - one "Agatha
Runcible".

Perhaps Pelan would care to explain to everyone why it is that for
over one year he failed to spot that Agatha Runcible was in fact a
fictional name taken from one of Waugh's most famous novels given his
alleged expertise on all things Waughesque............?

Shurely shome inconsistency?

Perhaps. But aren't you just joining fundoc and the other flies who think
any form of inconsistency is "shameless hypocrisy"? I'd tend to take the
more charitable attitude that - when it comes to the human race -
inconsistency is only to be expected.

As Walt Whitman put it:

"Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)"
(I believe Samuel Johnson also said something of the sort, though I can't
pin down the source offhand.)

It's only when the contradictions totally confound the author that it
matters, and in this case (someone who claims to know about Waugh but
doesn't recognise an allusion to Waugh), I doubt anyone cares (apart from
the flies, that is, and surely you don't wish to number yourself among
those?).

Haunted River quoted John Pelan as saying:

"You stupid c*nt, you wouldn't know an authentic signature if it
were tattooed on your ass. At least Michael Adams knows a
little bit about books. When you get done sucking his cock,
ask him why you're such a dismal failure. As you seem to like
this forum, shall I bring some of the files from BAD MR
TOAD over here for others to enjoy?"

Lawrence Person replied:

So you created a sock puppet to pretend to be John Pelan
making rude accusations and comparing you unfavorably to
your other sock puppet. We should care why?

Lawrence, I know you're pretty good at decoding all that stuff under the
"properties" and "view source" tabs that to me is just gobbledygook, and I'm
just a poor confused biped on the other side of the planet who doesn't know
what to make of all of this, so set me straight, please. Did John Pelan post
that stuff about "Christmas sausage" (http://tinyurl.com/yu6zz), or was that
someone just pretending to be him?

Because, whatever the ins and outs of this little tiff that these people
insist on continuing to belabour rcb with, I'd like to know who really wrote
that, just so I can know who is truly offensive, obnoxious and lacking in
taste here.

Well spotted. LP's allegation - which I missed in the mellee - is
completely false. Pelan DID say those things in the Yahoo Booksellers
forum owned by Bruce Tober. He said them while posting under his Yahoo
user name jpelan which he uses in many Yahoo groups. If you join the
group you can see for yourself.

Pelan has habitually lost his rag and said things like this. It is not
out of character. In fact, when I first quoted the 'stupid c*nt' bit
above in alt.books.ghost-fiction, Pelan's response was to threaten to
sue me for copyright infringement. So I really have no idea why or
where LP gets this ridiculous nonsense about sock-puppeting under the
Pelan name. Unless its part of the vendetta which the folk at BAD MR
TOAD are pursuing.

NB. It may interest you to know that a friend of Pelan's - the
notoriously abusive "deathdream" - is a member of Pelan's malicious
abuse site 'Bad Mr Toad' at Yahoo. It is in fact this deathdream who
started playing around on the alt.books.ghost-fiction list by posting
abusively under *my* name.

Shell-shock is a contributing factor. For example, I've twice posted
about book collecting here in the last two weeks - John Pelan stalks
me to twice post abusively and off-topically. He also joins the Yahoo
Booksellers forum shortly after me. Why? To post on-topically? No - to
post abusively (as you recently saw). I get the same thing in
alt.books.ghost-fiction. I post about an issue or a book under
discussion - John "I'm Not Obsessed" Pelan just has to jump in with a
nasty personal attack.

It's stalking, harrassment, abuse, trolling, obsession - whatever name
you want to call it. And it ranges from snide asides to full-blown
profanity e.g. the sausage comments you refer to. But he thinks it
works in his favour: if he perpetuates a bad atmosphere in ghost story
forums, he can use that as leverage to get people - by which I mean
'propspective customers' - to join his own discussion forum at Yahoo.
So I can't see it stopping. It's financially beneficial to him to
perpertuate the discord.

I think my being able to show his behaviour up for what it is has made
things worse. All those associated were Bad Mr Toad were greatly
embarrassed after I turned over the stone to expose what was actually
being said in there. Pelan also appears to object to the success of my
debut book publication, and the positive responses that my short
fiction has elicited. And of course he would not be best pleased at
being caricatured in the current issue of WEIRDLY SUPERNATURAL (in
which Pelan's notoriously profane language features).

Still, when he comes trolling in here, there's little anyone can do
about it. It's your group as much as mine. His behaviour sours things
for everybody.

TTFN,

Chris Barker
