Default Magnification

Hi, Everyone.

I bought a magnifier a couple of days ago, because the one I currently
have is only 2X, and it doesn't magnify as much as I'd like. The one I
bought was 10X, which I'm hoping'll be enough. Here's my question:
What strength do people recommend? I'm thinking 10X will probably be
plenty for most purposes, but I'm not sure. I assume you need pretty
strong magnification for grading, but I'm a bit at a loss, because I
haven't been in the hobby for awhile. Any suggestions would be very
much appreciated.

There was recently a thread about this, as I recall. Most folks say that
7X to 10X is excellent for grading, with higher powers useful for
examining errors, die cracks, general VAM stuff, and like that. I use a
7X Hastings Triplet (Bausch & Lomb) for general looking/grading and a
binocular microscope with 10X & 30X power for the other fun stuff.

Thanks for the reply, Scot. I feel better about it now. I think 10X
will be fine for my purposes.

Everyone will have their favorite and I am no different.
I have and use a Hasting triplet 7X (also have a TINY 5X) and
the 7X works well for me for what I want to use it
for. I used to have one of the older B&L 5X and I really preferred that one
(and that magnification) but I lost it at a coin show. I left it on a
dealers counter space.
A 10X would be totally wasted for me.

I liked the bigger lens on the 5X and it didn't have a swivel point like the
Hasting does.
The Hasting cost me somewhere around $30 and the swivel has gotten loose
allowing the lens
to open in my pocket. I don't like to carry a case for it.

I also have a 10X-30X Binocular Microscope but I seldom have a use for it.
I don't do minor varieties and die stuff. Too miniscule to get excited
about ;-)
Though I do have some old Reichpfennig with large interesting die cracks.
Those can be seen with the unaided eye on my examples.
