How to identify 'True Firsts"?
Hi,
In which way can you identify what is the 'true first' of a edition. I collect Bookers and this is often an issue as the UK edition is often trumped by an Australian/Canadian edition. The question arose as I was thinking of this year's Pulitzer and the fact that it is an Australian with dual citizenship in the US. I assume the 'true first' is the US 2005 but I actually have no evidence for that. Or that there wasn't a small Australian run which has happened in the case of Peter Carey when he has won Bookers notwithstanding that the true firsts were Australian editions from the University of Queensland press. So is there a definitive web esource listing publishing order? Cheers EdenR |

Beyond that there are reference books, and actually I like to do a search on the internet and if more than one dealer mentions a "point" which determines a first, I go with that. Beyond that there are very general principles you can look at for each publisher and know that they differ from publisher to publisher. There are many guides, books on book collecting which identify these points. But at times it can be a very difficult and tricky proposition. Rick |

Cheers EdenR If you have the ISBN, use xisbn to get all the relevant ISBNs and then use amazon (or worldcatlibraries.org) to get the exact publishing date for each ISBN. THe earliest one is probably your true first. I am planning on starting http://ww.ibookdb.net/ (in a few months, latest by early next year) where I will automatically carry out this entire process. You can register there to know when the site will be starting out. -- Manage your book collection online at http://www.parchayi.net/bookshelf |
