US Scott 321 cancel question

At the bottom of the current request list is a strange cancel on a
questionable copy of Scott #321 (1908, 2c red Washington, vertical
coil stamp).

Our question is: US Scott 321. This appears to be a fabrication of a
very expensive stamp. The cancellation is very strange. Can anyone
identify it?

My friend and I agree that the stamp looks like a sheet margin copy
with the perfs. trimmed off on the left side. The cancel has a format
similar to U.S. parcel post cancels, but neither he nor I knows enough
about U.S. cancels of this era to make a good guess about what it is,
nor about whether it makes the stamp more or less likely to be
genuine.

As always, any information would be appreciated.

Blair--thanks for the thought. I'll pass the idea on to my friend.
My limited experience suggests that both registered mail and parcel
post cancels were similarly oval, so that would fit.
