I shall be getting an LCD monitor in the near future and over the last few
weeks I've been going around doing a little bit of homework. I have not
looked at 19 inchers; I have only checked out 15s and 17s. So far I have
discovered that once you get to and beyond the 400:1 contrast ratio there's
not much difference between the various models. I must admit however that
the 17 inch Sony 400:1 I saw at Compusmart (the only Sony 17 they had)
attracted me very much. It seemed to me, but not to my wife, just a hint
sharper. She saw no real difference from the other 400:1s

There are Compaq, Hewlett Packard and LG 15s and 17s available for $350 -
$450 CDN but they are 300:1 CR and I could really tell the difference when
viewing stamps. However, there was hardly any difference between them and
the 400:1s when viewing full monitor pictures.

If you intend going to different stores doing homework, I would recommend
you scan some stamps to what you personally consider a bang-up scanning job
and put them up on a web page somewhere. Most computer shops have internet
access; ask them to go to that web page and check the quality of the
picture. If you just go to, say Ebay, you will never be certain whether the
monitor or the original scan is lousy if the picture happens not to meet
your expectations. HTH.

I have installed yesterday at work, for a colleague, a very impressive (and
quite expensive) 20" LCD Dell monitor, and I was rather disappointed,
especially by its colors, that looked somehow washed out. I have tried to
set it up, but unsuccessfully.

IMHO, even my over 5 years old 17" Sony CRT monitor has a better image.

I had a 17" CTX with my old HP system and the monitor was fantastic.
New PC came with a 17" HP, no comparison in color in crispness. The CTX
was awesome, and sells now for around $120 as a 17". They make a 19"
which last time I saw it was about $150.
