Hello:

I am a old stamp collector that got interested in collecting ages ago,
but have stopped seeing the US stuff that is out is mear labels with
pictures on them. But I am into Europe between the wars, Russian Space
Stamps, and naturally US but up to 2002 or 2003, where I have almost a
full collection from 1920 on. I have cataloged my Russian collection
seeing I lived threw that era, and then some. But my long question is
how to interest folks on stamp collecting ?
My other question how do you attach pictures to this group ?

Thanks for listening to me,
JIM

Welcome to the group JIM. Many of are also OLD stampers with varied
interests.
Posting pictures to the group is mainly via cjoint, a French thing.
Attaching pictures is not allowed.
Rodney will most likely give you the rundown on using cjoint.
I call Sir Rodney the Australian dumpster diver. He collects really
wierd stuff that most dealers discard as waste. So far he has not
denied dumpster diving.
Me, I am the OLD one. I have stopped all my collecting except for
Joint Issues with a common design.
It is nearly impossible to get someone interested in stamp collecting.
I have found that they must already have some interest and then you
may be able to further their interest by sharing your collecting
intrests and facts about stamps.
This is my two cents worth. Others in the group will surelly add
theirs. That is what the group is all about.

I will have to agree with Raphael, stamp collecting is one of those
hobbies that you either love or have no use for. My ex-wife and kids
have not one ounce of interest. However when I met my present wife I
told her I collected stamps and she said well that's nice. So I set out
to figure out some way to draw her in to the hobby. She thinks penguins
are about the neatest critter on the face of the earth, so I figured wow
there have to be some stamps with penguins on them somewhere. Sure
enough there were and now she is hooked. She has actually gathered a
fairly representative collection of the worlds penguin stamps over the
last 12 years. She is always interested in going to a stamp show with me
because she might find another another penguin waiting for her there. I
am in my mid 50's and have collected since I was a small child. My kids
have so little interest in my collecting that I am wondering what will
become of my collection when I pass out of this world sometime in the
future. Maybe one of the grandkids will have a spark of interest before
that time, or maybe as my wife chuckles, she'll never need to buy a
stamp. She always laughs and says you use the oldest first......right??

G'day Jim,
I am the weird guy that collects junk, the "dumpster diver".

I am here to tell you to have no concern for your collection.
What you do, is to pass on the joy.

Amongst my junk, I also have valuable (albeit boring) normal stuff.
A member (from Germany) here sent me a very valuable Australian "first
flight" cover, that I often
drag out and appreciate, it is beautiful.
I will pass on the joy, I have donated all my stamps and software to my
local stamp club,
along with the first flight cover.
The club benefits from the sale of my collection,
and the collectors benefit by the joy of part time ownership.

How good is that?

If you want to promote stamp collecting, you have to promote it.
wear a tie with stamps on it
wear a badge on stamp collecting.
tell people and be proud of it, etc etc.

I actually feel sorry for those who do not "collect", it doesn't have to be
stamps
they are missing that something special we are all aware of.

"Jim"
have so little interest in my collecting that I am wondering what will
become of my collection when I pass out of this world sometime in the
future.

Hello Jim,

Welcome, as has been said, to the group.

This may startle my cohorts, but I am thirty years old. I began
collecting stamps in 1987. The first pane I purchased was the North
American Wildlife issue.

My son is five years old. He has a stamp album. He earns stamps for
particularly "good" behavior. He does not strictly differentiate them
from "stickers", but he loves them all the same. He is a through-and-
through thematic collector. He is a devotee of coal-fired rail
engines, and when he has been PARTICULARLY good, demands a new train
stamp in his album. His album? An empty approvals booklet from the
1950s.

I started, briefly, collecting stamps when I was still in Japan, where
I spent some formative years. At age 8.5, I moved to the United
States, and when a stamp collecting adult came to "hook" the class on
the passion (in -- I guess -- 1988) I was grabbed forever. Blah blah
blah, putting it aside for girls later on. But I picked it up again
quickly when I was married. At age 22 I was back in the thick,
getting letters published in Linn's and starting to specialize.

I am not a child, per se. But I am not sure my 1988 self is entirely
different from children today. Yes, we didn't have the Internet, we
didn't have computers, blah blah. But it is a captivating venture,
and may "stick" in more kids than you might think, if for nothing else
than immediacy and tactile engagement. I don't think the CIA Factbook
and Wikipedia have obselitized stamps. My ex-wife -- four or five
years ago! -- watched a film and said she had never heard anything
about the Spanish civil war! Egads. But, of course: I knew of this
from age seven or eight. Hearing of a bombing in Harare, and being
able to find a cover in a more experienced collector's trove?
Priceless. Stamps bring it home as nothing else does.

I've had people say to me things like, "But how did you know AT ALL
that a trident stood for Ukraine". The answer: yes, you guessed it.

So, welcome. We'll be here, young and old alike. Looking forward to
seeing your posts.
