A San Francisco dealer offered $10,000
to the Post Office Dept., for ten
thousand sets of the Columbians, 1=A2 to
$5, which were to be withdrawn from
issue at the end of that year, the
"stamps to be cancelled to order, with
several different styles of obliteration,"
and with the further stipulation that
the deal be kept "secret."

His proposition drew a fast, but curt
rejection from the Department.
