This book titled, The Gun and its Development with notes by W.W. Greener, is
published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., London, Paris, & New York, 1st
Edition, Copyright 1881. It is in good condition. The book is 674 pages with
about another 10 pages of gun advertisements by the (W.W. Greener's Complete
Price List of Guns, Rifles, Ammunition, and Accessories). This is a
comprehensive book on the development of the gun with chapters on early arms
and cannons, early hand-firearms, percussion rifles, breech-loading rifles,
penetration of rifle bullets, central-fire guns, the proofs of gun barrels,
cartridges, manufacture of gunpowder, hammerless guns, choke-boring, gun
trials of 1858-1859, field trials of 1866, gun trials of 1875, 1876, and
1877, and much more. The book has a weak spine and a couple of loose pages,
but no pages missing. The book measures 7 ½ inches x 9 inches. The first
page is torn (no other pages torn). This is a very interesting book on guns
from the perspective of authors and their knowledge during the late 1880s.
Even the last pages of the gun advertisements are well worth studying.
