ANA Sued by former Executive Director Larry Shepherd
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The American Numismatic Association was recently
served with a lawsuit by former Executive Director Larry Shepherd. There is no merit to any of the allegations contained in the lawsuit, and it will be vigorously defended. The ANA will make no further comment with regard to this pending litigation. The ANA is being represented by attorney Jody Moran of Jackson Lewis, LLP. Any inquiries should be directed solely to Moran. http://www.jacksonlewis.com/people.php?PeopleID=1038 |

Does ANA have any significant bang for the buck for the average collector anymore? |

ANA Sued by former Executive Director Larry Shepherd
Is Larry Shepherd still employed by Harlan J Berk? I know they
received a lot of criticism from women in numismatics for hiring a cheater while the 22 year old female employee of the ANA, who was also fired, didn't get hired by someone in the good old boy network. He is no longer listed on their page of employees http://www.harlanjberk.com/departments/experts.asp |

That's why I asked why the average collector would want to be. |

That's why I asked why the average collector would want to be. I am ANA 35 years now (however, I do need to send in my dues for 2013). ANA is what you make of it. It is a magazine subscription, a top notch annual coin show, a summer seminar (nice hobby vacation experience) and the ANA enforces a weakish control over the ethics of commercial coin dealers - as a coin dealer, people MOL expect you to be ANA and if somehow you get thrown out, then you must be very damn questionable. That said, very few people ever get thrown out. And that's what the ANA is. Membership $46 p.a., take it or leave it. oly |

Membership $46 p.a., take it or leave it. oly ----------- Most of the things you mention are available without an ANA membership. There are a variety of coin magazines that cover what most collectors are interested in. Membership isn't required to attend an ANA coin show. I would prefer to have my own reference copy of coin books dealing with what I specialize in, not borrow them. Traveling to Colorado for a coin seminar? I don't think so. I suppose, like you say, if you're a coin dealer, potential customers might think more of you if you're an ANA member. And membership can be a status symbol for some collectors who never expect to take advantage of its benefits. Otherwise, for the average collector like me who doesn't spend a lot and seldom goes to a non-local coin show, I still don't see the "bang". |
