Kind of bizarre how people come up with those borders, such as early France and some early Romania sharing a very similar border on the monarchy stamps. Tracy Archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates from the Neolithic period. Swastikas as decorations are THOUSANDS of years old (long before Hitler) . The albums illustrated by Rod were printed well before 1933. Blair |

Tracy, I'm not aware of early Romania stamps with swastikas on them. Have you some examples (scans), please. TIA. No, that's not what I meant. I meant that France and Romania shared the same type of border, not swastikas. |

Hi Victor, I am not answering for Tracy, but I took him to mean the "castling" bordering many early stamps, the design being ubiquitous across many countries. http://cjoint.com/data/cxnvcUJohI.htm Many countries seemed to have followed the early French Ceres design, and why not? a very attractive series. Yes, that's it. Argentina did on some of the locals... |

It is really sad that events of the 20th century had to take that rather
interesting geometric shape (and such a wonderful 'good luck' symbol in so many cultures, especially in Asia) and so thoroughly destroy it.... :-( -- ___________________________________________ ____ _______________ Regards, | |\ ____ | | | | |\ Michael G. It is really sad that events of the 20th century had to take that rather interesting geometric shape (and such a wonderful 'good luck' symbol in so many cultures, especially in Asia) and so thoroughly destroy it.... Unfortunately, there are many such examples, and they can be easily found on stamps too. Among the extensevely used are the symbols "Hammer & Sickle" and the "Red Star": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammer_and_sickle Also the old symbol of peace, the Dove, was often misused during the 20th century by the so-called peace movements ("better red then dead" in W. Germany, etc.) -- Victor Manta ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Communism on Stamps: http://reds-on.postalstamps.biz/ Philatelic Webmasters Organization: http://pwmo.org/ Art on Stamps: http://artonstamps.org/ Romania by Stamps: http://marci-postale.com/ Spanish North Africa: http://www.sna-on.postalstamps.biz/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
