"Harv" wrote in message ... "Jud" wrote in message oups.com... Latest issue of the AARP magazine (yes, I am old enough to be a member) If you are 50, you can join the AARP. They have some mystical magical way of finding out when people turn 50 and sending them an invitation letter to join. I got such a letter shortly after I turned 50. Where they get the names and addresses I have no idea. For ten bucks a year for the membership, I think that's what it is, the membership can get you some pretty decent discounts here and there for this and that. Then again, so can an AAA membership card, but those cost way more than ten bucks a year. Then again, I don't think the AARP will come out and change a tire or bring you a can of gasoline if you're stupid enough to run dry. Harv I joined AARP when I turned 50, a pre-baby boomer who worried about falling through the demographic cracks. At $5.00 per year, I figured how could I go wrong. Those motel discounts alone would offset the $5 in no time. But all I seemed to get were ads for insurance and other old people mail offers. As for those 10% AARP motel discounts, I found you could get the same discount for just about any reason if you only asked-- even just being over 50. The AARP newsletter was full of ads and typical common sense stuff that anyone around for 50 years and who occasionally reads the newspaper should already know. Then the annual subscription kept going up, so I eventually bailed out after the novelty of being a "senior" wore off. Today, just about anything we need to know can be found in an internet search. Harv I'm a mere 45, but I have been getting the ocasional invitation to join AARP since I was in my early 30's. And I always thought I looked young for my age. |
