Alas, no
The first auction has been removed.
IIRC there were two singles that reached (let's say) above $700
I do recall a bidding war and it may have gone over the $1000 but I cannot
be really sure.
I also remember one going over that in a suburban auction, that's not to say
they all do
I have also seen them as "door prize" at auctions.http://www.acestampauctions.com/realised.php

The dealer is Ian Boulton, a local lad, who found his way to Stanley Gibbonshttp://www.acestampauctions.com/about.php

Yes, indeed,
in fact I may be able to prove it.
IIRC the stamp auction in question actually posts its results (how
wonderful that is)
I'll have a lookeesee.

Yet having said that, I have seen Hutt River collections realise $300
and Penny blacks regulary realise over $1000 in my little hamlet. It's a
bit of a dog's breakfast out there.

Wait -- *single* penny blacks?

Hi Rodney:

I checked it out and found out why..

The sale in question had about twenty penny blacks.
(SG #1, 2, 3)

THe catalogue value ranged from 275 to 4000 Pounds.
This was because nearly all plate numbers were for
sale from SG 2. (Plate 11 is extremely rare)

SG1 -

A plate 6 copy (cat 425 Pounds $A 860) sold for
just over 30% at $A 280.

A copy of the rarest shade (intense black) sold
for $A 220 (26%)

SG2 -

A number of stamps from plates :
1A, 1B, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 and the rare
plate 11. catalogur values ranged from
275 Pounds ($A 555) to 4000 Pounds
($A 8108).

The Plate 11 went for $A 800, which was
a bargain, in my humble opinion, as it was
less than 10% of S.G. value.

Seven lots had no bids. The others sold
for between 28% and 56% of catalogue value.
A torn copy of SG2 sold for $A 80 (10%).

This is why all penny blacks are not alike
and some can fetch $A 800.

In the same sale , I noticed Lot 85.
28 Australia Post year books.

Face value : $A 1250.
Buyers cost : $A 1575
Retail value : $A 2100
Suggested Start bid : $A 1000
Sold for : $A 950

Boy! Were they a good investment, or what?

Alo noted mint Aussie decimal booklets collection
sold at 75% of face (17% of catalogue).

A SG catalogue of India + States (2004) went
for $A 26 (13 pounds)

Lots of good philatelic books from $A 2 and $A 5 up.

W.A. cancels collection KGV to present (600) $A 50
same but pre-decimal only (220) $A 40

There were no bidders for the several lots of kapuls
with estimates over $A 1000.

Thanks for that run through Blair,
and probably explains why I have no blacks in my collection.
That was the first auction where I was aware of rising prices,
I went away IIRC with just one cinderella, many of the lots
seemed to me to go for 50% above my estimation, but it
was evident that the material was far better than other auctions
and the "phossick boxes" realised in the hundreds as well.

Australian "year books" have always been a spectacular failure
and the loss you explained is quite common, I think it belongs
to stuff "marketed for the collector" that the collector shuns,
albeit there are the odd year books that show profit.
Hagners have risen, once a dollar a sheet, now $1.30

I am going to a coin auction this morning, usually there are
a few maybe 5-10 lots of philatelic material, today, probably triple.
Maybe the recession is biting?

Possibly due to increase in petrolium prices.
Hagners / Varios have also risen 30% here.

Maybe we should collect Hagners instead of stamps?

.... Which reminds me of something a local stamp dealer once said about me
"Frank prefers to collect catalogues containing all those expensive stamps,
instead of collecting the stamps that are listed in the catalogues" (I owned
tons of catalogues back then, now all sold with very few exceptions).

Today a second hand "Davo" stock book 60 page sold for $60
A "phossick" box I had my name on,
sold for $260 (not me I am here to tell you)
People around me were whispering... "where's the recession?"
