Default US "Copper" Quarter 1993 Minting error

I have a quarter that I got some years ago after buying
something...that's not important the thing is that the quarter
appears to be made entirely of copper. originally I kept it because it
looked so unusual but recently I have been turned on to the fact that
it may be worth some nice money I was wondering if anyone knows just
haw much something like this could be worth
It's a 1993 us Quarter and its in very good condition the color
looks just like any penny with a few tiny spots of silver around parts
of the head and e in liberty
I'm interested in selling if it's worth a lot... otherwise I'd
like to keep it for its "cool factor" thanks for any help!!!

There are a couple of ways a 1993 quarter could look like it is copper. One
is that it could have been discolored after leaving the mint, and this would
add no value to the 25 cents the coin would otherwise be worth. I must
emphasize that this is by far the most likely cause. It is also possible,
however, that it was struck from a planchet made from something other than
the standard alloy. In 1993 the mint was not, to my knowledge, making coins
for other countries, so this possibility would seem slim indeed. If I
recall correctly, the mint had outsourced cent planchet production by that
date as well, meaning that if it were struck from cent stock, it could not
be a quarter sized planchet punched from cent stock, but would have to be a
cent planchet, and therefore the same weight and composition as a ~1993
cent. This is possible, but it would make the coin very thin and not likely
to be fully the diameter of a quarter. Another possibiltiy is that it was
struck from a quarter planchet which lost its outer cladding or possibly was
punched from strip which was lacking the cladding. In the first case, it
would be much lighter and thinner than a quarter, while in the second case
it would have a weight about that of a quarter. Verifying the last case
would require a specific gravity analysis (which is much simpler than it
sounds) and / or an expert examination, and is the most unlikely of the
given scenerios. Therefore, if the coin looks otherwise like a quarter
except for the coppery color, it is quite likely a discolored quarter and of
no increased value. If it has other major differences (such as size /
wieght), it may be from one of the other possibilities. Only in the least
likely case of a quarter struck from a planchet punched from stock lacking
both layers of CuNi cladding is a copper coin generally aproximating a
quarter possible.

As to values, it would be very difficult to determine without examining the
piece, but if it were a quarter struck on a cent planchet, it would have a
value in the range of $100 according to the most recent price guide I have
at my fingertips. If it were a quarter struck from stock lacking both of
the clad layers, I don't have an educated guess since I don't collect such
issues, and don't have detailed price guides. My uneducated guess would be
tens to hundreds of dollars.

If you feel that your coin might be one of the latter cases, you should
first take it to a reputable dealer or two before sending it in to a grading
service for authentication.
