Default Is this caused by dipping?

The lister calls it "porous." Is it dipping that caused all those pock
marks? Or could it be corrossion caused by a PVC holder?

Dipping doesn't cause porosity, but may make it more obvious by
removing the toning. A coin like this was probably buried for a
while.

So just being in the ground causes it to become porous?

Oh, you bet!
Contact with the "salts of the earth" promote gentle (or not-so-gentle) corrosion.
Hit the right combo of moisture, acidity and time, and porosity results.

....and dipping sure won't fix that!

"Porous" is a nice way of saying "pitted by corrosion just like "toned"
sounds better that "tarnished". Billy

And tarnished sounds better than oxidized.
