Italia? Definitely an Italian Riscontro revenue. I just sold several
of these recently. She's on several other early Italian revenues in
different categories.

Thanks Tracy,
I wasn't sure if this was a cut out, it seems on thick papaer,
I'll give it a gentle soak now.
These Revenues are arriving constantly,
what catalogue do you have/recommend?

Maybe on piece? Many revenueshave been cut to shape and one would
have a tough time figuring out it it's on piece or thick paper.

I'll give it a gentle soak now.

There are some more recent catalogs, no doubt, but I still use Forbin
for most of my older revenue stamps. Far too much money to buy
catalogs for every darn country issuing revenues! I do have
specialized catalogs for Austria (Erler), Germany (Erler), Hungary
(Barefoot and another excellent reprint) and Portugal & Colonies
(Berata), as well as my Canada Van Dam and Yvert France. The
obligatory Barefoot are here for GB and CommonPoop.

They're not like Scott, with many countries in one catalog. In fact,
many are still very much incomplete.

Someone else, no doubt will come by and fill in the details that I
don't have. :^)

Some has uploaded the entire Forbin catalog on-line. It takes a
little getting used to, because some of the countries / territories
are not in the order one would think.

Considering the last edition was 1915, it's not a bad effort.

You can find the online Forbin catalog at
http://www.revenue-collector.com/forbin/forbin.html.

This site replaces the previous Forbin site. They have solved
the country naming problem by using frames and a list of English
language names.

Rodney :

Your right hand stamp is :

Italy (Marco di Risconti)=(Control Stamp)
Forbin #2 (1866)

since the Kings of Italy and the Dates of their reigns we
Vittorio Emanuele II 1861 - 1878
Umberto I 1878 - 1900
Vittorio Emanuele III 1900 - 1946
Umberto II 1946

Therefore the bust is of King Victor Emmanuel II.

Here he appears on a 20 lire gold coin of 1861.

Here he appears on a set of postage stamps from 1863.

Here is a statue of him in the Vela Museum (Switzerland).

A short bio can be found at:

There is also a small monument dedicated to him in Rome.

Not a good assumption, oh studious one - although a nice try.

Vittorio Emanuele II 1861 - 1878
Umberto I 1878 - 1900
Vittorio Emanuele III 1900 - 1946
Umberto II 1946

Therefore the bust is of King Victor Emmanuel II.

It is either a VERY VERY VERY V-E-R-Y young Emmanuel II or it is
female. Where's the facial hair on the stamp, Blair?

Here he appears on a 20 lire gold coin of 1861.

VERY BIG difference between Rodney's stamp and Emmanuel II's common
portrait, used on Italian postal and revenue stamps of the period.

I think you need to zoom in a little closer on this issue, my friend.

I think, (biting my lip) I side with Tracy here Blair.
Is that a crown the bust is sporting?
perhaps an early draft of the "Syracuse Coin" model?

Hence my claim in a version of "Italia". Not to get anyone's goat,
with my reply, mind you - but the jump from that picture to Emmanuel
II's next issue is what - maybe 30 years difference in age - in a 2 or
3 year span? They age quickly in Italy? Must be the water, I dunno.
