rarest coin? NE coin? and when did modern coin making begin?
In an old post I saw the rarest US coin was the 1913 Liberty Nickel
which has 4 or 5 specimens in existence. I remember reading a long time ago that a colonial new england "NE" coin was pretty rare... only 3 existed? Does anyone know what coin this was and anything about it? Are there pics on the web? Also, when did the modern method of coin making begin? Those old Roman coins aren't perfectly round... |

Right on with the 1849 $20.00 1 minted. I've seen it at the Smithsonian.
I don't know if the 1848 $20. would be considered rarer with a mintage of 0.............of course with zero minted---its not a coin ?? -- "Mad Scientist" wrote in message m... I don't know if a 0 mintage coin can be considered a coin -- is a 1934 St Gaudens $20 rarer than a 1933? -- but there are coins that are known to have been minted but are unknown in any collection. These could be considered rarer than the 1849 $20 -- at least we all know where that one is. -- Bob |

Breen mentions this and says that photos of the other coin show it to be lacking the marks on the smithsonian coin. He traces some of the pedigree as well. Seems better documented than a lot of his drug dreams. Hasn't been seen in my lifetime, as far as I know. Bruce |

I have heard speculation that Woodin owned the Gilt brass coin, but certainly his writings don't reflect this. Judd never saw it and Lord knows he looked. Bruce (Check your change!) |
