Default Cheap Sheaffer fountain pens disappearing?

On Sat, 27 Sep 2003 at 02:14:52 GMT, Ken Wallewein scribbled:
-I've been using cheap ($5) Sheaffer fountains for a number of
-years,

Ditto.

- ... And I hate fat pens.

I'll second that!

-The problem is, I don't seem to be able to find these pens any
-more. The local stationery warehouses seem to have stopped carying
-them.

Dunno where you are but Sheaffer has had no visibility here in
the Censornati area for the last 15 to 20 years -- and we're only
about 400 miles from Fort Madison!

In contrast, a Parker fountain pen for about $9 or $10 can be
easily found at supermarkets, drugstores, and discount department
stores that have major stationery displays! And I'm talking about
here, now, today -- not 30 or 40 years ago!

As for your question, try contacting pen dealers who are active
on this newsgroup, or who advertise in the pen zines, etc., etc.
Some of them have junk bins of used pens. Many of those are old
Sheaffers. I think the best way to do this kind of buying is in
person at a store or show (with a coin collector's ten-power
lens!!). But if you're doing it by mail order, I'd suggest getting
a satisfaction-guaranteed policy so you can return any pens you
don't find satisfactory.
