I'd have graded that coin EF40 and slept soundly. But if PCGS wants to
call it a grade lower, well, there are times when honest men will
disagree.

What's up is that people are still bidding on Ira's auctions because of
his unassailable reputation for honesty and straight shooting. How are
yours doin'? ;-)

Yep. We just rose from a chuck roast as it turns out. On Friday I'll
propose some fish to the wife.

Presidential Review. But based on what Ira has said, it would likely
come back 35 because of that mark. D.H. is not going to overrule his
graders on that close a call. If you go the review route, the coin
better be "all there".

IMO, misgrading coins is part of PCGS's business model. There are a
finite number of coins to grade. This is one way to increase that
number and create additional grading fee revenue.

You may or may not have heard about a dealer (Steve Contursi) who
recently turned in 13000(!) PCGS inserts from coins he cracked out and
resubmitted.
Barry

Wonder how many of them upgraded? And I wonder how many were Old
Slabs.

Bruce (Got a few upgrades in Old Slabs, waiting for my next free

Now for the coin. If the coin was any better then VF-35 then the holder would
have that grade on it. The coin was sent to PCGS to be graded and now he
complains about the grade. People can't have it both ways. It is a VF-35 at
best and I agree with PCGS.
Alan as for you I see you have a lot to learn about coins. If I were you I
would keep my mouth shut and learn how to grade coins. If you can be talked
into a better grade of a coin then what is on the holder I have about 100 PCGS
coins that are undergraded ..You are a Fool !!!

Firstly, you are a liar in that no one 'complained' about the grade.

Secondly, if you were me, you'd be posting with your real name and email
address.

Thirdly, my friends don't misrepresent their coins. How yours doin'? ;-)

Now, now...if he thinks we know who he is, he'll just pop up under
another id.

For you to agree with PCGS, you would first have to have some knowledge
as to the proper grading of coins. This is knowledge you obviously lack.
Given your fondness for a grading service other than PCGS, you are no
more equipped to comment on the accuracy of PCGS's grading than a two
year old is able to critique a doctoral thesis on astrophysics. I
strongly suspect the reason you "like coins" is because they are bright
and shiny much the same way I believe you would be fascinated by the
outside surface of a chewing gum wrapper.

I didn't see any so-called "complaining". I did see Ira say that the
reason that he believed the coin didn't get the 40 grade, even though
the detail is there, was because of a small problem on the reverse
which is a logical assumption IMO.

That aside, also IMO, all of the top grading services (NGC, PCGS,
ANACS) have the most difficulty being consistent when grading copper.
If you aren't aware of that fact then you obviously haven't seen very
many slabbed copper coins. I've seen some real head shakers, in mine
and several dealer friends opinions, (that were both under AND over
graded) from all of the aforementioned services, whether it be Large
Cents, Half Cents, Indians, Lincolns or 2-cents.

If you can be talked

coins that are undergraded

I'll bet you have at least 10 times that amount from another "service"
or two that are *over* graded.

Doesn't give the impression of overall sharpness that this coin should have
in XF. I think the grade is correct.
