Generally, boiling or steaming the non-tip part of the pen is pretty
important to make sure it's clean. Of course, I'm not sure what effects
things like that can have on the look of the feather, so there may be
other methods which will achieve the same result without so much effort.

Steaming should be okay. That is one of the ways traditional
archers preen arrow feathers. Well, IMS
