Collecting Dallas Cowboys Cereal Boxes

January 12, 1998; revised June 1, 2008
by Fred Goodwin

INTRODUCTION

For Cowboy fans, collecting Wheaties boxes is an interesting (and
inexpensive) way to keep up with "America's Team". Several Dallas
players (including Deion, Troy and Roger) have been featured on recent
Wheaties boxes. A unique Wheaties set is the three-box set released
for Super Bowl XXX.

2002: EMMITT SMITH

2002 was the year Emmitt Smith broke Walter Payton's all-time NFL
rushing record; Wheaties issued a commemorative box to celebrate the
achievement; this is the most recent Cowboys-themed Wheaties box that
I am aware of.

1997: SUPER BOWL REPLAY

Wheaties recently released a set of five "Super Bowl Replay" boxes
that feature the following players: SB3, Joe Namath; SB6, Roger
Staubach; SB18, Marcus Allen; SB27, Troy Aikman (Frosted Wheaties);
and SB29, Steve Young (Raisin Wheaties) (where I do not indicate a
specific type, you can assume I mean regular Wheaties).

Each box features a 3-D image of the player from the respective game.
My interest is in the Cowboys -- they have been featured on several
Wheaties boxes the last few years.

The 1997 SB6 box features Staubach passing over the Dolphins'
defensive rush; the SB27 box shows Aikman raising his hand to signal
"No. 1". All five boxes share a common back: a thumbnail discussion of
the five SBs and the performance of the featured player in each game.

1996: SUPER BOWL XXX; ALL PRO QUARTERBACKS

In 1996, the Cowboys were featured on the Super Bowl 30 commemorative
box. Pictured were Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, Aikman, Emmitt Smith,
and Jay Novacek. The back of the box featured a photo of Emmitt and a
short discussion of the Cowboys' '95 season. The side panel was on
offer for the SB30 collector's book.

Wheaties released an interesting promotion related to Super Bowl 30: a
mini-box set of three boxes. A Cowboys helmet is on the first box,
Honey Frosted Wheaties. The middle box features the SB30 logo (regular
Wheaties) and the last box (Raisin Wheaties) features the black
Steelers helmet. This must have been a regional release, as I never
saw it in Austin.

Late in the year, Aikman was featured with Dan Marino and John Elway
on an "All Pro Quarterbacks" box. The back details career stats for
Marino and Elway, but three Super Bowl wins for Troy.

1995: SUPER BOWL 30th ANNIVERSARY; DEION SANDERS

In 1995, Aikman was featured with Bart Starr and Terry Bradshaw on a
collector's edition box commemorating the 30th anniversary of the
Super Bowl. The back is trimmed with helmet logos of each SB winning
team. The three passers are dubbed "QBs of the decade" even though
Troy had won only two SBs at the time. The side panel featured logos
of all thirty SBs.
Deion was also pictured on a Frosted Wheaties box. The back has four
pix of Deion and a short bio including career stats.

1994: SUPER BOWL XXVIII; NFL 75th ANNIVERSARY

In 1994, the commemorative Super Bowl 28 box featured Daryl Johnston,
Ken Norton, Aikman, Emmitt, and Irvin. The back repeats the front
photo and includes a short review of the Cowboy's '93 season written
by the Sporting News.

Although not featuring the Cowboys specifically, Wheaties released an
NFL 75th anniversary collector's edition with Sammy Baugh, Don Shula,
Dick Butkus, Jerry Rice and Walter Payton on the front. However on the
back, in a pictorial history of the NFL, mention is made of the
Cowboys' loss in the '67 Ice Bowl and the Cowboys' 2nd consecutive SB
win in '94. The side panel lists NFL champs from 1920-1965, AFL champs
from 1960-1965, and Super Bowl champs from 1966-1993.

1993: SUPER BOWL XXVII

1993 saw the first Wheaties box of the Jerry Jones era: a
commemoration of SB27, picturing Novacek, Aikman, Irvin, Emmitt, and
Norton. The back includes the SB27 logo, helmets of both Dallas and
Buffalo, a picture of the SB27 game program, and a short review of the
'92 Cowboys season by GameDay and Team NFL. The NFC and AFC teams are
also listed.

1984: KELLOGG'S DANNY WHITE

The first cereal box I'm aware of that featured a Dallas Cowboy player
was Kellogg's Corn Flakes (1984) picturing Danny White. It is the only
box that shows a Cowboy in a blue jersey. The back and side panels
featured a Kellogg's/NFL game to win SB tickets.

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of cereal boxes featuring
the Cowboys, but rather a representative list.
