Year 1981

1. Prince Charles got married
2. Liverpool crowned Champions of Europe
3. Australia lost the Ashes
4. Pope Died

Year 2005

1. Prince Charles got married (again)

2. Liverpool crowned Champions of Europe (again)

3. Australia lost the Ashes
4. Pope Died

In future, if Prince Charles decides to re-marry and Liverpool wins
another European crown.... will someone please warn the Pope?

G'day Dag,

On a tour of England in 1882, Australia narrowly beat England
by 7 runs in a tense and exciting match, which prompted the
Sporting Times to run an obituary lamenting "The Death of English Cricket",
with the footnote "N.B. The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia".
The following Australian summer, England played a series in Australia
which the media played up as a quest to "regain the ashes". A small trophy
was created, containing some ashes (burnt stumps), and presented to the English captain.
Except in times of war, regular series of Test matches between these two
countries have continued until this day, playing for the right to hold the Ashes.

Of particular note:
The first ever held international game was between USA and Canada!

The first ever Aussie team to tour England was Aboriginal.

We probably can thank the French for the name "Cricket" (we had a
flourishing habit of pinching good things from the French

Although "the right to hold the Ashes"( a little wooden urn) was created,
the stingy Poms will not allow Australia to have them when we win them.
(which is rather often They remain in England.

HTH

Rodney

The reason we won't let you take the ashes home is that you are a
nation of convicted felons ( rather like the original inhabitants of a
place called Virginia! ), and we might never get them back!

Regards from Pom-Land ( tongue very firmly in cheek)

I wonder if there be a statute of limitations
for bad reputations?
Keep a firm grip on the Urn.........We'll be back......

Remember, we may have taken the odd loaf or two,
you lot, the odd country or two.
(tongue in similar position)

Why do not sincerely confess that the original urn got lost in England?

BTW, I highly appreciated the humor and the info of this thread, gentlemen.

Just to notice that in Blair's sequence:

1. Prince Charles got married
2. Liverpool crowned Champions of Europe
3. Australia lost the Ashes
4. Pope Died

the point 4. doesn't match the other three ones, because the English church
isn't catholic, AFAIK.
