"Dale Bowman" wrote in message ... I received in change a while ago a series 1953B $5 bill that says united states note on top and has a red seal. What is this? These are "United States Notes" see the title on top of the note. These type notes were issued until the 1966 $100. This type note dated back to the Civil War era, and basically was a predecessor of the Federal Reserve Note in that it was issued by the Federal Government, and was basically a promise to pay the bearer a certain amount of money, though that money was not specified as to whether it was silver, gold, or even bronze cents, so the government obligated itself to pay the bearer in lawful money, but did not get specific as to how it was going to pay. $2 bills were the most common denomination for the "United States Notes" and the $100 bill was the last of this type issued. If it is in great condition it might be worth $6-7 otherwise it is not worth much more than face value. Dave --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. a series 1953B $5 bill that says united states note on top and has a red
seal. What is this? It is a $5 United States Note, still valid currency. There were only 46.8 million printed, so =depending on condition and markings= it *might* have an "over-face" value to those who collect these. Look to see if the Serial number is preceeded by a "C" or by a " * " Also look at the condition. You might try to sell it on eBay. 8-/ Coin Saver |
