I believe that the 8-track recorder line at RS ended with the 803. The
ultimate!!

Mine is a TR-883. Where does that fit in the line-up? (I'd like to think it's
"80 better" but something tells me that isn't the case . . .)

Yeh, the TR-803 rules the lavatory, as a "****house general"- I had 2
of those junkwagons, thank goodness someone bought them ! Watery
sound, wimpy DC motor with lots of wow/flutter, plastic tape head
supports that were both broken (just like the techs here said they
would be). They look good, but ain't much of an 8-track player. Even
a Transcriber.

An Akai playing out of one channel, would sound better than a TR-803.
Even a Wollensak would be a better choice.

The best deck going for the money is the Roberts 808D, I bought 3 of
them, 2 were under $20 each. They get overlooked on ebay all the
time, while the identical Akai CR80D brings $50-100

It's the best deck RS over made, but that's not saying much...

TR-800, 801, 802, 803 are the "full-size" machines, and mostly different from
each other. The 880 series started when Radio Shack owned Allied Radio, and when
the Justice Dept. killed that deal they became part of the Radio Shack line.
They're smaller machines, but pretty decent. From what I can figure out, the 881
and 882 were made by Sharp; the 883 is a re-labelled Panasonic RS-808.

Happy trails,
Larry B.

As always, the knowledge level in this group amazes. Thanks Larry!
