Noodler's in Canada?
MAN, I've been asking a lot of questions Forgive my exuberance.
Anyway, I was wondering if anybody knew of a retailer here in Canada that sold Noodler's ink. Unfortunately, US retailers tend to *ahem* overcharge us Canadians on cross-border purchases - it's not that USPS is expensive, but some private individuals & businesses think that it costs an arm and a leg to ship up here - it really doesn't. I'm sure you could stick a label & a stamp on the bottle of ink and send it up here for less than a dollar. But I digress. If anybody could help me out here, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! ~Tx |

Hey Tx,
I'm a member of the Ottawa Fountain Pen Society (along with being a member of Zoss, the Yahoo group FountPenCollecting and Pentrace). The last time the members of the OFPS wanted Noodler's, I was tasked with bringing it back up (about 2 dozen bottles) from the USA, since I was visiting a friend there at the time. Other than that, I have had Noodler's delivered to my door here in Ottawa, direct from the retailer Two dealers I'd highly recommend for fair shipping costs for any pen related stuff (including Noodler's, but not exclusive to that brand) a - Swisher Pens (http://www.swisherpens.com/) - Pendemonium (http://www.pendemonium.com) They always charge actual USPS costs. I haven't figured out why, but it seems that my USPS packages from Pendemonium come a bit cheaper -- but then Noodler's is slightly less expensive at Swisher. That, and I've been ordering quite a bit of stuff from Swisher that's probably much heavier than my average purchase. ) Which part of the Great White North, Tx? Cheers, Jimmy. I'm out in Regina, Saskatchewan - the boonies, in other words Thanks for the tips on getting the ink! I have asked shops in Alberta to stock Noodlers. I get a big song and dance about how they can't import things that do not have French on the labels. I also asked for a few specific pens and get a diatribe on how the manufacturer won't supply them in Canada because their marketing research shows they won't sell. The truth is they can get the products, it just takes a bit of work and they don't want to do it. If they "set the bar too high", they might be expected to perform that way all the time. I found a shop that goes the extra mile to get product, and strangely, it doesn't cost much more than the US price in Can. dollars. I bought my first Waterman Phileas for 45.00 CAN. at Staples, and then found it in this guy's shop for 25.00 CAN...(sound of me kicking my own ass...) I guess my point is the small group of penners in Canada just have to be a bit more demanding, and be willing to call "bull----" when required. Maybe that way we won't be stuck with buying Mont Blancs at inflated prices in jewellery stores. Its not that I don't like the mail order thing, but it's just nice to have a shop to pop into and look at new stuff, and maybe pick up a pot or two of ink or some nibs....ya know? :-) C. |

I have asked shops in Alberta to stock Noodlers. I get a big song and
dance about how they can't import things that do not have French on the labels. I think that's bunk. I believe that Vancouver Pen Shop and Laywine's (in Toronto) both carry Private Reserve ink and to my knowledge, PR doesn't have French labelling on their bottles or boxes. Besides, all the Noodler's bottles and boxes have that are English-only (not counting the name) is "Made in USA". I'm sure the stores can arrange for Nathan to print out from "Fabrique en Etats Uni" labels to stick on the boxes -- or they can do so themselves. I also asked for a few specific pens and get a diatribe on how the manufacturer won't supply them in Canada because their marketing research shows they won't sell. The truth is they can get the products, it just takes a bit of work and they don't want to do it. What pen brands in particular, C.? Just my gut feel, but I'd be more inclined to believe that it's the merchant's own market research (and even then, it's probably just based on their own feeling about it than anything really concrete) that shows what products may or may not sell. Cheers, Jimmy. |

I don't even think they would have to go that far. It's just a retailer that's too comfortable. Unfortunately, the number of shops is so limited here, that you can't go anywhere else without hearing the same crap. Cheers, Jimmy. Certain models of most of the big names, but the one that springs to mind was a model that Pentel makes. They stocked it only with black ink, but I had used other colours, and really wanted the Pentel shades. I ended up injecting different ink into the black one after it was empty. The shade just wasn't what I wanted. And if anyone knows of a place where a Albertan can go to buy Pentel Color Brushes in all their colours, I sure would like to hear. Right now, I get my friends to buy them in the states and bootleg them up to me. C. |

However, if one were to go down 107th Ave. in Edmonton, near all the noodle houses, and look for a place that "obviously" sells pens and such like things....one might find it....8-) Last time I was there, he was out of the Phileas, but he has a very good selection of other pens, and really good prices. And I think he might really try to get Noodlers in. At least he told me he would. Around these parts, this guy really is "The Last of the Mohicans" when it comes to a hard working retailer. C. |

I'm listed on a proposal in response to an RFP for the Ministry of Health (at least I think that was it -- I didn't prepare the proposal), so I might actually find myself living out in Edmonton for the next 18 months or so. ) But you seem to suggest that Edmonton doesn't have great selection in ink. | Ah well, it sucks here in Ottawa too. D Thanks for the information, C. Cheers, J. |

Who needs permission? It sounds like a store open to the public, and as you say yourself, "obviously" sells pens. Therefore it's not private info, so feel free to name names, give phone numbers, etc. Perhaps they guy will get some additional business. Michel.
