Euro Creator to announce TERRA currency
On October 29, 2003 Bernard Lietaer, Co-founder of the Euro, will
announce his plans plans for the unveiling of the Terra, the world's first global trade reference currency. The Terra project is the launch of a commodity-backed Trade Reference Currency (TRC), a supra-national currency that works in parallel with national money systems. It is uniquely designed to provide a stable international mechanism for planning, contractual and payment purposes worldwide. Stay tuned for more about this exciting announcement. More about the Terra Project he www.futureofmoneysummit.com/terra-project.php The "Future of Money" summit is something that all numismatists should be aware of. We spend almost all of our time investigating and reporting the money of the PAST -- and occasionally of the present. Seldom do we get involved in truly creative activities such as this. |

Isn't that just after it says "And the one who was Conan the Barbarian shall step forth to govern in the land of the free..." That'll never happen! |

I once saw a list of the "Top One Hundred" things to watch for, that are said to precede the anti-christ..... The call for a new type of "trade dollar" is a not unexpected by-product of globalization-- --just like high unemployment and declining standards of living. The generations of Americans that remember 72-hour work-weeks, child labor, and elderly people committing suicide rather than starving (before FDR's 'New Deal' brought us Social Security) are fast disappearing. Although not fast enough for the shady moguls of multi-national corporations that currently rule the economic planet. Seeing the names of Mr. Forbes and Mr. Bloomberg (in their corporate form) as sponsors on the 'Terra' webpage was certainly no surprise. Advocates of globalization, global currency, and free trade, would just love to erase national social 'safety-nets' (regardless of nation) to further propel their global profits agenda, whilst pulling the rug out from under everyone else (--that means us, folks--unless your name is Forbes..). Now, Please don't read this wrong. I am not a 'nationalist' in any sense of the word. Even though I DO favor using U.S. dollars, buying U.S. made goods, and eating tomatoes grown in Florida-- not Mexico. ( --I also believe that the Oval Office should remain restricted to native-born Americans, but that's grist for another mill....) While I do NOT favor unbridled globalization, nor international currencies, I cannot lose sight of the fact that nationalist fervor can lead to all kinds of trouble (--as it did for the Germans and the Japanese in the 1930's & 40's, and will for Americans today, if we're not careful). In our era of instant electronic banking, (and similarly rapid transfers of great wealth) to say that there is any 'need' for an international currency is specious, indeed. It would be better for all concerned if any future international currency were small-scale, strictly physical, and numismatic in nature. |

However, instead of carrying markers (paper and coins), or cards that point to markers, a quick biometric scan will be the same thing as money. I'd suggest that most coin collectors are far more interested in the history, the art, and the collectability of coins than they are in their economic role. The future of money may indeed be about nonphysical forms of exchange, but I don't believe this means, as you said, that it's something that "all numismatists should be aware of." Much futuretalk is sheer speculation anyway. Some of it comes true, much of it doesn't. Take at look at some of the very long term planning that took place in the past. As far as the terra being the world's first global trade reference currency, hello? The Athenian Owl assumed this role 2,500 years ago, in the world of its time. There have been a good number of other coins and currencies that have done this since, not the least of which is the U.S. dollar. -- Coin Collecting: Consumer Guide: http://rg.ancients.info/guide Glomming: Coin Connoisseurship: http://rg.ancients.info/glom Bogos: Counterfeit Coins: http://rg.ancients.info/bogos |
